Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher’s Concerns Over Andy Robertson’s Form and Transfer Plans

Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has expressed concerns that a player he holds in high regard has become a liability, and TEAMtalk understands that the club is looking to bring in a ready-made replacement for him in January.

Since Arne Slot’s arrival at Liverpool, the team’s on-field performance has largely been positive, with Slot’s coaching methods bringing out the best in players like Ryan Gravenberch, Cody Gakpo, and Luis Diaz. However, one notable decline has been in the form of left-back Andy Robertson. At 30, Robertson is no longer the reliable defensive force he once was, and his dip in form has prompted Carragher to call for a new addition to the squad.

In an interview with Sky Sports following Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United, Carragher remarked, “Liverpool need to sign a full-back. I think they need a left-back.” He continued, “Trent Alexander-Arnold was really poor [against Man Utd]. He will be a lot better than that and Conor Bradley is fantastic. I just think Andy Robertson, who is an absolute legend, is just hanging on in every game. I don’t think Kostas Tsimikas is quite of the standard to come in and replace him.” Carragher concluded, “I think if Liverpool could get a left-back in January, I think that’d put Liverpool in a really strong position to win the league.”

    Liverpool’s Pursuit of a £40m Left-Back

Despite reports from The Athletic’s James Pearce on Boxing Day suggesting that Liverpool are willing to wait until the summer to find Robertson’s successor, TEAMtalk’s transfer expert Fraser Gillan has learned that Liverpool are actively considering opportunities in the January window, particularly in the left-back position.

Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez is reportedly a target for the Reds, with ESPN’s Mark Ogden confirming the club’s interest earlier this month. When discussing why Liverpool has only “minimal interest” in Fulham’s Antonee Robinson, Ogden said, “The name that has been put to me is Milos Kerkez at Bournemouth. He would fit the profile much better than Antonee Robinson.”

Kerkez, who recently signed with Fali Ramadani’s Lian Sports agency, is expected to move out of Bournemouth at some point in 2025. This move could be accelerated by Bournemouth’s deal to sign his potential replacement, Julio Soler, from Lanus for a fee of £6m, which could rise to £12m with add-ons.

TEAMtalk understands that Kerkez is currently valued around £40m, although his price could increase if Liverpool faces competition from Manchester United. The Red Devils have identified the Hungarian as a potential fit for their left-wing-back role in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system. Should United increase their pursuit of Kerkez in January, Liverpool may have to act sooner than planned.

Liverpool has a history of acting quickly in January when a rival shows interest in a target. In 2022, they moved swiftly to secure Luis Diaz after Tottenham showed interest, and in 2023, they acted fast to sign Cody Gakpo after Manchester United explored a move for him.

Other Transfer News: Darwin Nunez and Tyler Dibling

Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has expressed concerns that a player

In other developments, Football Insider reports that Liverpool may be willing to sell Darwin Nunez if offers of £50m-£60m are made. This follows comments from transfer expert Rudy Galetti, who told TEAMtalk that Liverpool is open to parting with Nunez in 2025, with a summer exit being more likely than a January departure.

Additionally, Liverpool is reportedly in pole position to sign Southampton’s Tyler Dibling, but only if they make a concrete move. Failure to do so could see interest from other clubs, with Newcastle and Manchester United both tracking the winger closely.

Liverpool vs Leicester predicted lineup: Diogo Jota and Andy Robertson decisions confirmed

Liverpool will aim to solidify their position

Liverpool will aim to solidify their position at the top of the Premier League when they face Leicester City today, with Arne Slot facing key decisions regarding his lineup.

With Christmas now behind them, Liverpool shifts focus back to their pursuit of the Premier League title.

The Reds host Leicester City later today, and a win would ensure they enter 2025 atop the league. Chelsea’s match against Fulham earlier in the day could give Liverpool a chance to extend their four-point lead if the Blues drop points.

Liverpool are strong favorites at Anfield, where they meet Leicester for the first time since the Foxes’ return to the Premier League under former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy. However, Slot faces some tricky decisions about his team.

As usual, Alisson Becker will start in goal, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, and Virgil van Dijk holding their places in defense. The first decision concerns the left-back position.

Andy Robertson, back from suspension against Tottenham, performed better than in the Fulham match, although Dejan Kulusevski tested him. However, Slot often rotates his left-backs, so it would not be surprising if Kostas Tsimikas returned to the starting lineup here.

In midfield, Slot faces a dilemma. Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, and Dominik Szoboszlai all impressed against Spurs, but with two of them one yellow card away from suspension, caution may be required.

Liverpool will aim to solidify their position

Gravenberch and Szoboszlai are the at-risk players, and Slot must decide whether to risk both. We believe he might avoid playing both, so we predict Curtis Jones will replace Szoboszlai.

Mohamed Salah will start on the right, leaving the left and No.9 positions up for grabs. With Darwin Nunez out of form, the remaining spots are likely to be between Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, and Diogo Jota.

Diaz, having impressed at Tottenham, keeps his place in our lineup, while it might be time for Jota to start for the first time since October.

Predicted Liverpool line-up vs Leicester: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Tsimikas; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Jones, Diaz; Jota.

Liverpool Injury Update and Potential Return Dates for Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate

Liverpool's injury concerns have eased recently

Liverpool’s injury concerns have eased recently with the returns of Alisson, Diogo Jota, and Federico Chiesa. However, several players are still sidelined during one of the busiest periods of the season.

In the past week, Liverpool’s injury situation has improved, with Alisson, Diogo Jota, and Federico Chiesa rejoining Arne Slot’s squad. Alisson made his comeback in the Champions League match against Girona, while Jota came off the bench to secure a draw for the Reds against Fulham on Saturday.

Despite these positive returns, a few players are still recovering, and here’s the latest update on their injuries, along with some suspension details.

    Ibrahima Konate
Konate injured his knee during stoppage time of Liverpool’s win against Real Madrid at the end of November, after a clash with Endrick and Virgil van Dijk. It was initially reported that the French center-back would be sidelined for five to six weeks, missing all of Liverpool’s games in a packed December schedule.

What Slot has said: “They will both (Konate and Conor Bradley) be out for a few weeks. I have said many times before, it’s always difficult to judge how many weeks this exactly is because you can think in the beginning it’ll be like this and then the end stage of an injury process can always differ a bit.” – quote from December 1.

    Expected return date: January 2025

    Conor Bradley
Bradley also picked up an injury in the Madrid game, as his excellent performance was interrupted by a hamstring issue in the second half. The Belfast Telegraph reported shortly after the match that the Northern Ireland international was expected to be out for about six weeks.

What Slot has said: “They will both (Bradley and Ibrahima Konate) be out for a few weeks. I have said many times before, it’s always difficult to judge how many weeks this exactly is because you can think in the beginning it’ll be like this and then the end stage of an injury process can always differ a bit.” – quote from December 1.

    Expected return date: January 2025

    Kostas Tsimikas
Tsimikas hasn’t played for Liverpool since early November due to an ankle injury, but he returned to training last week and could be ready for a return in the coming days.

Possible return date: 18 December vs Southampton or 22 December vs Tottenham

    Andy Robertson

Liverpool's injury concerns have eased recently

Due to Tsimikas’ injury, Robertson has featured in all of Liverpool’s last seven matches across all competitions. However, he will miss the next match after being sent off against Fulham. He will serve his suspension during the Carabao Cup match against Southampton and will be available for the upcoming trip to Spurs.

Expected return date: 22 December vs Tottenham

    Alexis Mac Allister
Mac Allister has missed consecutive matches due to suspensions, first in the Champions League against Girona and then in the Premier League against Fulham. His last appearance was in the 3-3 draw with Newcastle on November 4. He will be well-rested when he returns, likely against Southampton this week.

Expected return date: 18 December vs Southampton

How many Liverpool matches Andy Robertson will miss following red card, with Premier League rule clarified

Liverpool news as Andy Robertson’s return date is confirmed after being sent off against Fulham in Saturday’s Premier League match.

For just the third time in his professional career, Andy Robertson was shown a red card. His early dismissal left Liverpool playing with 10 men for more than 75 minutes against Fulham.

This marked his second red card for the Anfield club, and Robertson appeared stunned when referee Tony Harrington sent him off shortly after Andreas Pereira’s opening goal. VAR upheld the decision, leaving Arne Slot with a dilemma to address.

With a goal and a man down, Liverpool found themselves without their two main left-back options, as Kostas Tsimikas was already suspended for accumulating yellow cards, having received his fifth against Newcastle earlier this month.

Fortunately for Slot, Robertson will not face a further suspension in Premier League matches. Aside from missing the remainder of the game against Fulham, who proved as resilient and combative as expected, Liverpool’s Scottish full-back will return soon.

How many Liverpool matches Andy Robertson will miss following red card, with Premier League rule clarified

Under new regulations, even a straight red card results in only a one-match ban, depending on the nature of the offense. In Robertson’s case, he was judged to have denied a clear goalscoring opportunity when he fouled Harry Wilson. The former Liverpool player had seized on Robertson’s poor touch and was fouled while heading towards Alisson’s goal.

According to the rules, unlike serious foul play or violent conduct (which carry three-match bans), a foul like Robertson’s only results in a one-match suspension. A handball preventing a goal also earns a one-game ban, while offensive language leads to a two-match suspension.

For Liverpool, this means Robertson will miss only one match. Thanks to favorable scheduling, his suspension will apply to Wednesday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against Southampton, not next Sunday’s crucial clash with Tottenham. Robertson may have been rested for the cup match anyway, as Liverpool are heavy favorites to progress.

This means that Robertson will be available for the visit to north London next weekend.

  • Arne Slot addresses Liverpool’s left-back situation

Arne Slot addresses Liverpool’s left-back situation

Liverpool manager Arne Slot explains his rotation strategy between Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas this season.

The left-back position has been a challenge for former manager Jurgen Klopp, with Robertson as the primary choice until his shoulder injury in September 2023. During Robertson’s absence, Tsimikas excelled, giving Liverpool two strong options on the left side of defense.

Both players have performed well under Slot, who insists that the presence of options does not create a “dilemma” for the team.

“I wouldn’t say a dilemma,” he stated during a press conference. “There are other positions where we have rotated. It probably also has to do with Robbo’s [Robertson’s] pre-season. He had none; he came back injured from the Euros and missed almost the complete pre-season.

Kostas did really well in that period. That’s why we started rotating at the start of it; if a player has missed pre-season, he can’t play three games in a row. That’s the situation. It was good for him [Robertson] to play against Arsenal and Brighton, making sure he is getting into the rhythm.”

Liverpool will face Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield on Saturday, having recently beaten the Seagulls 3-2 in the Carabao Cup. The Reds have achieved seven wins from their first nine league matches under Slot, currently sitting in second place behind reigning champions Manchester City.

£66.6m star reportedly refuses Liverpool’s terms despite substantial offer

Liverpool will face Arsenal today in a key match

Liverpool will face Arsenal today in a key match that could strengthen their status as contenders in the Premier League.

Arne Slot’s team has made a strong start to the season, but performing well against top teams is essential.

Despite their impressive performances so far, Liverpool has a significant concern. It’s remarkable that they might lose three of their top players on free transfers at the season’s end.

Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold have been pivotal to Liverpool’s success over the past decade. Two of them serve as the club’s captain and vice-captain, making their contributions vital.

However, if Liverpool does not secure contract renewals, these players could leave for nothing. Recently, reports indicated that Liverpool made a substantial offer to the England international in hopes of reaching an agreement.

According to Football Insider, Trent Alexander-Arnold is unlikely to renew his contract and may be heading to Real Madrid, who have shown significant interest in him.

Last summer, Liverpool placed a £66.6 million valuation on Trent. Losing such a talent without compensation would be disastrous, prompting the Reds to do everything possible to persuade him to remain.

One thing that can be said about Liverpool is that the media often lacks insight into the club’s internal matters, meaning these rumors could simply be speculation aimed at influencing the player.

Liverpool trained at the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday morning in preparation for their midweek Champions League match against Bologna at Anfield.

Darwin Nunez and Andy Robertson provided a boost for Liverpool by participating in open training, easing concerns about their availability for the game. However, Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa were absent from the session.

Nunez missed Liverpool’s 2-1 win against Wolves on Saturday due to illness, while Robertson left the match with an injury. Despite this, Reds head coach Arne Slot downplayed concerns about Robertson’s fitness after the match.

“I don’t expect it to be a big problem although you never know,” Slot remarked. “I think he just got a knock in the end stage of the game; maybe he was a bit tired as well.”

“The guy who came in, Forbs, I knew him from Dutch competition; he made it a real fight for him as well. He got a bit of a knock, but I’m expecting him to be in training Monday again, but let’s wait.”

Slot’s early assessment has been confirmed as Robertson participated fully in training at the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday morning, along with Nunez, who has recovered from illness.

With their return, Harvey Elliott remains Liverpool’s only absentee, as the England Under-21 international is expected to be sidelined until after the October international break due to a fractured foot sustained last month.

Liverpool began their Champions League campaign with a 3-1 victory against AC Milan last month, thanks to goals from Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk, and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Slot utilized the trip to the San Siro to give Kostas Tsimikas and Cody Gakpo their first starts of the season, with Robertson and Luis Diaz being benched as a result.

It is uncertain whether he plans to make further changes against Bologna at Anfield on Wednesday night, although Nunez’s return to training adds to his options. The absence of both Jota and Chiesa, who have had previous injuries, poses a potential challenge for the Dutchman, casting doubt on their participation against Bologna.

Slot will provide an injury update on his squad during a press conference to preview the game at 3pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Liverpool and Manchester United to compete for Bournemouth player in transfer showdown.

    Kerkez

Liverpool and Manchester United are reportedly vying for long-term replacements for their left-backs. Andy Robertson has been a key player for Liverpool, featuring in over 300 matches and winning titles such as the Premier League and Champions League over the past seven years.

Manchester United, facing injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, has struggled in that position, resorting to playing right-backs and centre-backs like Diogo Dalot and Lisandro Martinez out of their natural roles.

Liverpool and Manchester United monitoring Kerkez

According to TEAMtalk, both clubs are monitoring Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez. The 20-year-old, who has already earned 21 caps for Hungary, joined Bournemouth from AZ Alkmaar last summer for a reported fee of £15.5 million, and has quickly adapted to the Premier League’s pace.

TEAMtalk reports that Kerkez’s name has come up “again and again” in Liverpool’s recruitment discussions, with the player “continually watched” by the club. Chelsea and Manchester United have also shown interest in him, with United still keen to secure a deal.

Any potential transfer is likely to be delayed until next summer, given Kerkez’s significance to Bournemouth, who will likely demand a high price for him.

    James Pearce

Liverpool fans are understandably thrilled about the team’s return to the Champions League this season.

After a year in the Europa League, which felt unusual for a side accustomed to the elite competition under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool are back where they belong. Their campaign begins with a challenging away match against AC Milan on Tuesday.

An added advantage of Liverpool’s Champions League participation is the opportunity for their academy players to compete in the UEFA Youth League.

With fixtures aligning with those of the senior team, the young Reds faced their Italian counterparts in Milan on Tuesday.

Liverpool’s youth system is currently producing notable talent, with Kirkby emerging as a prominent talent hub.

The Reds have been adept at scouting and securing promising players from across the country. However, they also continue to develop some of the top local talents.

    Michael Laffey

One such talent who may not have received much attention yet is midfielder Michael Laffey. Having moved from Everton at age 10 and playing U18 football by 16, Laffey, now 18, has been promoted to the U21 squad for the upcoming season. Despite this, he played for Barry Lewtas’ U18 team against AC Milan in the UEFA Youth League on Tuesday.

Journalist James Pearce noted that Laffey performed admirably in the first half. Alongside Kieran Morrison, Trey Nyoni, and Trent Kone-Doherty, Pearce highlighted Laffey’s contribution. Pearce commented, “Decent opening 25mins from Lewtas’ side,” adding that “Nyoni driving them forward. Kone-Doherty and Morrison lively down the flanks. Laffey impressing in holding role.”

Pearce also mentioned, “Now Laffey to the rescue after a slip from Nallo.”

Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes, who was seen at the match with FSG’s technical director Pedro Marques, witnessed a promising Liverpool lineup. Players already noted by the first team included Amara Nallo and Trey Nyoni, with Morrison also receiving positive feedback. New signings Rio Ngumoha and Alvin Ayman both started on the bench.

Andy Robertson is pleading with Mohamed Salah to stay at Liverpool despite the Egypt forward’s current contract expiring in June of next year and his failure to sign a new one.

Andy Robertson has backed his colleague Mohamed Salah, stating that there is no denying the forward’s significance to Liverpool.

Salah’s record speaks for itself as he gets ready to lead Liverpool’s front line at Old Trafford in the upcoming chapter of their rivalry with Manchester United. He has scored more goals against the Red Devils than any other team, which highlights why he is considered indispensable.

Salah, thirty-two, is still impressive. As the days on his current deal run out, his contract negotiations are still very much in the spotlight, but his performance is still very good. “Mo’s goals, assists, and all-around play speak for themselves, and we hope it continues in the future,” Robertson stated. He plays the big game.

“Mo always shows up and comes up with something in the biggest games. We hope that this season he continues to accomplish what he has always done against our biggest rivals. Mo ignited Anfield the moment he stepped through the door, but he has ignited other stadiums as well. Of course he is a Premier League legend, but he still hopes to pen a few more tales.”

This season, Salah has scored in both of Liverpool’s Premier League victories over Brentford and Ipswich. “You know when a big game is coming up, but Mo sets the bar high every single day,” Robertson continued. Mohamed Salah is a great example of a professional, and if any young people are looking up to professionals, Mohamed Salah is a good choice.

“He dedicates his entire life to football, every single day. It is evident what form he is in. As he gets older, his physical characteristics, output, and shape are improving. He deserves credit for it. He is undoubtedly our primary man, so we hope that keeps happening.”

Under new manager Arne Slot, Liverpool has not yet added any new players, but that is anticipated to change before the transfer market closes at the end of the month.

With Arne Slot taking over, Liverpool will formally usher in a new era in only ten days.

Jurgen Klopp, who opted to resign after nearly nine years in command, was succeeded as Liverpool’s manager by Slot. The Reds will host Ipswich on August 17 at Portman Road to begin the new Premier League season.

Liverpool hasn’t added any new players this summer yet, but that could change given that the team has been connected to several players. In light of everything mentioned above, Mirror Football examines the most recent transfer rumours pertaining to the team.

    Slot anticipates first signing

The Athletic claims that Liverpool wants to sign a new midfield player before the transfer window closes.

According to the article, Slot is “purchasing a specialist No 6 from outside of the Premier League,” despite having filled the position in preseason with Wataru Endo, Ryan Gravenberch, and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Liverpool turned down a summertime bid of about £12 million for Endo, but if they acquire a replacement, their position may potentially shift. The Japan international is attracting interest from several other clubs as well.

Argentina advanced to the quarterfinals of the Olympics thanks in large part to the 19-year-old Soler, who played in every match. Soler’s valuation is estimated to be approximately £13 million, and the article claims that Liverpool has been scouting the full-back.
