Chelsea have signed striker Deivid Washington from Santos for £17.1m (€20m) on a seven-year deal.

The club will now decide whether the 18-year-old Brazilian joins Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team squad this season or goes on loan to break into first-team football on a regular basis.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic is expected to undergo a medical with the Blues in the next 24-48 hours.

Chelsea will pay a fee of around £14m, including performance-related surcharges, to New England Revolution for Petrovic and have agreed personal terms with the Serbian international.

Petrovic becomes Chelsea’s second great goalkeeper this summer, after Brighton’s Robert Sanchez signed a £25million deal following Kepa Arrizabalaga’s move to Real Madrid and Edouard Mendy’s move to Al Ahli. The 23-year-old has excelled during the New England Revolution, keeping seven clean sheets in 22 MLS games this season.

“I don’t think there is an absolute goalscorer. Your goalscorer doesn’t have to be your centre-forward, as Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah plays on the right wing. So it’s not a criticism of Nicolas Jackson, he’s just arrived at the club and I’m impressed with him.

“But when you look at those key positions it still looks like four players need to come in to challenge Manchester City and that doesn’t feel right considering the amount of money they’ve spent.”

Chelsea remain active during the summer transfer window, with Deivid Washington the latest player to arrive in West London

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Deivid Washington from Santos as the Blues remain active through the summer transfer window. The club made a number of transfers as well as completing their first team squad overhaul.

Washington follows in the footsteps of Angelo Gabriel, who also joined from Santos and has since been on loan to Strasbourg after joining Mauricio Pochettino’s squad for pre-season in the United States. The 18-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge on a deal that could be in the region of £17m.

The striker parted ways with Santos on Tuesday after scoring six goals in 22 appearances for the Brazilian side in 2023 and signed a seven-year deal with the option for a further year. Upon signing, Washington said, “I can’t wait to make my debut here at such a great club, with lots of goals and assists.”

The youngster is unlikely to be the Blues’ latest signing, as Pochettino said in his pre-Luton press conference that two more could join him.

He said: “We need at least one goalkeeper. We have very talented young goalkeepers but they need time. We need more and then we talked about an attacking player, the right profile If we can add the right profile, yes, but not to bring players to be able to add another one. We don’t want to stop the evolution of some boys, Broja and Nkunku.

“We work hard, but we don’t make decisions because we need someone. We may need some players in these two areas.”

According to the report, Manchester City are currently leading the race for the 21-year-old winger, who has been identified by Pep Guardiola as a replacement for Riyad Mahrez. L’Équipe add that Rennes are reportedly ready to sell Doku this summer for around €60m (£51.4m). The Belgium international, whose contract at Roazhon Park expires in 2025, made 29 appearances for the French side in Ligue 1 last season, contributing directly to eight goals.

Doku started the new season in excellent form, scoring a goal against Metz on the opening weekend. His impressive performances and low center of gravity have earned him comparisons to Eden Hazard.
