Gary Neville criticized the decision to give Curtis Jones a straight red card during Liverpool’s trip to Tottenham, saying a yellow card would have been “fine.”.
Jones, 22, was initially warned for a late tackle on Yves Bissouma.
Referee Simon Hooper was urged by VAR to reevaluate the challenge, though. Replays revealed that Jones grazed the top of the ball when he lunged in and then caught Bissouma on the bottom of the shin.
Hooper changed his mind and decided to dismiss Jones, leaving Liverpool with 10 men for more than an hour.
Hooper had a look at the pitch-side VAR monitor before making this decision.
Neville, a former Manchester United defender, disagrees and said the decision will “ruin” the game.
Neville said, “No, I know when you’re doing someone on purpose, I’ve done myself in the past, and he’s not doing that,” in an interview with Sky Sports.
In reality, his foot slips over the top of the ball as he [the VAR] shows the referee the end motion.
“It’s never a red card, but he’ll get one if it ends the match.” Though his foot slips on top of the ball, I believe he has generally gone in sincere.
Although I’m not certain—I never am these days—and I’m not as confident in my knowledge of football as I once was, I don’t believe he entered the situation with malice.
“If you watch the last portion of it slowly, you’ll realize that it’s a red card.
The speed at which these players enter tackles must be observed in full motion at high speed; Bissouma and Curtis Jones are both flying in.
However, given the ambiguity surrounding such a situation, I thought a yellow would have worked well.
Tottenham took the lead thanks to Son Heung-min, and after a strong start, Liverpool’s momentum in the game was dampened by the red card.
Son scored from close range after Richarlison squared the ball to him after James Maddison’s pin-point pass found him in the left channel.
Cody Gakpo’s close-range goal in extra time helped Liverpool tie the game despite playing with a man down. Liverpool responded well to falling behind in the first half. The Dutchman had a great finish as he spun around and slammed the ball past Vicario into the goal.
