Premier League player who is close to signing a new contract was really liked by Liverpool, according to an expert.

Although he is about to sign a new contract at Stamford Bridge, Liverpool was a fan of Chelsea defender Levi Colwill during this summer’s transfer market.

According to Neil Jones’ exclusive CaughtOffside column, it’s no secret that the talented young Englishman was firmly on Liverpool’s radar this summer. He looked outstanding while on loan at Brighton last season.

Jones acknowledged that Liverpool could have done with bringing in a young center-back to eventually replace the aging pair of Virgil van Dijk or Joel Matip, and Colwill could have been a great addition to the Reds.

Colwill’s retention will delight Chelsea supporters, especially since there was a chance that Liverpool, another Big Six opponent, might have gotten a hold of him.

Jones adds that LFC might have been interested in someone like Josko Gvardiol, but that the market is currently lacking in alternatives.

“I think in an ideal world that is something they would look at, but the priority for now is elsewhere.
It’s gotten a little quiet in terms of Liverpool links with center-backs. Midfielders were prioritized at the beginning of the window, and this is even more true in light of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho’s unexpected departures, according to Jones.

“The pursuit of Romeo Lavia is ongoing, even though reaching a deal with Southampton is proving difficult, and I believe that now outweighs any urgency regarding bringing in a new central defender.

The fact that Liverpool needs a new defensive midfielder is no secret, according to Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds manager barely made an attempt to downplay the importance of replacing Jordan Henderson and Fabinho when speaking to the media in Singapore.

There has been a forced revolution rather than the evolution Klopp may have anticipated in a summer that always expected significant change in Liverpool’s midfield. The Reds’ preferred candidate to fill the position of enforcer in the middle of the park is a player named Romeo Lavia. With only 29 Premier League games under his belt, there are some questions about the 19-year-old’s experience, but Klopp and his hiring team obviously believe Lavia is up to the task. If not, they wouldn’t have made two offers.

Despite being relegated to the Championship, Southampton is holding out for £50 million, which is £9 million more than Liverpool’s rumored second offer of £41 million.

It is yet to be seen whether Liverpool will comply with the requirements if the Saints maintain their composure under pressure. They will be valued in other areas besides the south coast. The Reds will also have a cost that they think is reasonable.

A backup plan will be necessary if a fee cannon is negotiated. It makes sense to act in this way. And when Liverpool play their penultimate preseason friendly against Bayern Munich today, Klopp may well get the best look at one potential option he can.

Throughout the entire summer transfer window, Ryan Gravenberch has been mentioned. The Netherlands international, alongside Khephren Thuram, Manu Kone, and Gabri Veiga, was a name that kept coming up before Szoboszlai made a name for himself.

Only one year ago, Gravenberch paid £16 million to transfer from Ajax to Bayern. He was hailed as one of Europe’s most exciting prospects after helping the Dutch giants win three Eredivisie titles and two KNVB Cups.

But things weren’t exactly smooth during his inaugural season at the Allianz Arena. Even though Gravenberch made a total of 33 appearances and won the Bundesliga championship medal, he was largely an incidental player. The 21-year-old received a pitiful six starts, and he was benched 14 times.

Gravenberch will undoubtedly be hoping to contribute more significantly in the 2023–24 campaign. That may not be the case, however, as suggested by Thomas Tuchel’s preseason team selections. The last two games were started by Konrad Laimer and Joshua Kimmich. Meanwhile, the desire for another engine-room operator is indicated by the fact that Bayern was interested in signing Declan Rice before his £105 million transfer from West Ham to Arsenal.

If Bayern did indeed approve a departure, Gravenberch might decide to weigh his options as a result. Therefore, a strong showing against Liverpool could very well persuade Klopp that Gravenberch is someone who can fill the void left by Fabinho.

Another potential Lavia replacement that Liverpool has identified is the Fluminese midfielder Andre. The fact that he hasn’t played in either the Premier League or Europe raises some doubts, though.
There would probably be a period of acclimatization.

In 2023–2024, the Premier League won’t have many teams that are better than Liverpool. Gravenberch may very well demonstrate his suitability for the job with an arresting performance.

The next step in Jurgen Klopp’s development involves ruthlessness, loyalty, and a task.

Although there were many possible reasons for Liverpool’s difficulties last season, many supporters preferred to concentrate on one particular factor, writes David Lynch.

They believed that neither the extended absences of Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota nor the psychological cost of narrowly missing the quadruple were significant contributors to the Reds’ poor performance.

Instead, a consensus developed around the fundamental problem being the rather abrupt and simultaneous decline of several players who had been essential to the acquisition of trophies in previous years.

We were informed that Jurgen Klopp’s lack of ruthlessness in the previous transfer windows was the sole cause of this.

This idea was primarily motivated by the belief that the midfield’s shocking collapse could have been prevented if players like Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had been let go earlier.

It’s true that by the time that pair moved within two years of their contract expiration dates, it was quite obvious that they were both injury prone and that the manager didn’t really care for them even when they were healthy.

Unfortunately for Liverpool, that was also fairly clear to any potential suitors, which is why Keita was only able to sign a contract with Werder Bremen this summer and Oxlade-Chamberlain has yet to find a club.

In actuality, it wasn’t Klopp’s hesitation to approve a transfer earlier; rather, no clubs were lining up to sign either player off of the Reds’ hands.

In light of this, it is largely unjustifiable to claim that Klopp was ever motivated solely by loyalty and a desire to hold onto them.

However, that does not imply that the German has always been faultless in that regard.

Just two summers ago, it was his personal intervention that ensured Jordan Henderson was given a new, lucrative contract that ran until 2025, and Saudi Arabia’s recent pivot to football has only been able to save that choice.

Even so, Klopp would likely contend that if his captain had been benched sooner to begin a midfield rebuild, the quadruple push of 2021/22 would not have occurred.

The Reds’ manager may also have a case for citing this summer’s transactions as evidence that his ruthlessness is by no means lacking.

Once it became clear that Henderson would be willing to join Steven Gerrard at Al Ettifaq, there was no chance of him getting in Henderson’s way.

Additionally, despite not having any intentions to sell the Brazilian going into this summer, he did not object to Al Ittihad’s approach for another stalwart in Fabinho.

In the end, a business decision was made with clarity, one that anticipated a better long-term future for the team without the two men who had been instrumental in its recent successes.

And because of Klopp’s tendency toward loyalty, we have been told repeatedly that he cannot do that.

The Anfield trophy cabinet attests to the fact that the manager has only ever had favorites when players have consistently performed for him.

That is something that the new additions from this summer will undoubtedly learn throughout the upcoming season as they strive to establish their value on the team alongside Henderson and Fabinho.

However, if they fail to meet Klopp’s demands, they will undoubtedly discover that claims that he lacks ruthlessness are largely unfounded.

If Liverpool can address two problems, Jürgen Klopp already has a new Fabinho who is similar to Moisés Caicedo.

In a dream transfer window, Jürgen Klopp would undoubtedly get away with twice at Brighton. Liverpool have already signed Alexis Mac Allister and re-teaming him with Moisés Caicedo would be a ruthlessly effective way to fill the Fabinho gap.

In April, Sky Sports reported that Caicedo was an interesting player for Liverpool. They have cited him as a player who could make up for Jude Bellingham’s missed entry, but like the Englishman, Brighton’s in-demand midfielder is an excellent all-rounder and could even be a solution to Fabinho’s farewell.

Since then, transfer reports have stalled, with Chelsea the leading candidate. With several big offers rejected, it seems clear that Caicedo has long since moved out of the price range Liverpool would like to operate in.

If anything, Caicedo’s unavailability underlines the deal Liverpool made with Mac Allister, having taken advantage of a very advantageous release clause. But a player similar to his former Brighton colleague – someone who is both a six and an eight, with proven world-class qualities – would make Klopp feel a lot better about the situation in midfield. That player may already be in the ranks of Liverpool. Although Klopp has mainly used him up front, his numbers paint him as a very similar proposition to Caicedo, with numbers of tackles far exceeding last season’s version of Fabinho.

Come forward, Thiago Alcântara. With Caicedo ranked his most comparable player in Europe’s top five leagues by FBref, their profile is flawless. After welcoming Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai in the number eight roles and watching the development of Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott, Klopp could now see his Spanish master as a dedicated number six. The biggest myth about Thiago’s career at Liverpool is that he is weak in possession. The opposite is clearly true. His 3.35 tackles per 90 minutes last year placed him in the 95th percentile of all midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues, despite him playing for a team that dominates possession. For context, Fabinho recorded 2.13 tackles per game over the same period.

Thiago is also an expert on wiretapping. The same ability to read the game that makes him so good in possession also allows him to deflect attacks.

So where do these defensive misconceptions about Thiago come from? One possibility is that fans realize the very real problem that the Spaniard has a tendency to take unnecessary risks in dangerous areas, a habit that can create chances out of thin air for the opposition.

It’s a clearly unusual trend for Fabinho and Klopp would need to address it before he can truly trust Thiago as his number six. The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich star was disowned 1.67 times per 90 minutes last season, putting him well below the Premier League’s fourth percentile. With 0.38, Fabinho was in the 93rd percentile.

However, given his playing intelligence and ability to follow instructions, there is reason to be optimistic that Thiago can adapt. Particularly when deployed as a deeper midfielder, he could certainly be struck by the importance of a safety-based approach.

It is the second problem which seems a little more insurmountable and which could force Klopp to return to the transfer market. While Caicedo made 37 appearances last season, Thiago made just 18, with the veteran struggling with fitness issues since he arrived at Anfield. Although this is a ‘stop-gap’ in Thiago’s final year of contract, there is no real reason to be optimistic that his fitness can reach the level Liverpool need. It would certainly be unwise for Klopp to rely on his existing line-up in the middle of the park knowing that his only solution Fabinho for the senior is so injury-prone.

However, Thiago’s presence at least means Liverpool could potentially walk away with just one more signing in midfield. There’s no denying that it’s still a risk, but it’s a calculated risk – especially if the money saved is invested in bringing in defensive staff.

Signing a young number six like Roméo Lavia and then balancing your minutes with Thiago and Stefan Bajčetić seems like a sensible path. Days away are to be expected for the oldest member of the trio, but the young duo are said to have enough confidence during these times to get involved.

Of course, a young and fit Thiago would be the ultimate transfer dream and that’s basically Caicedo. But given the realities of Liverpool’s budget and the very real need to kick out an elite ‘unicorn’ defender with his left foot, Klopp may already be thinking about his new Fabinho.
