Liverpool failed to get any key midfield goals last summer and paid the price with a dismal Premier League season.

Jürgen Klopp: ‘It was a pleasure to work with Ox – I love him’

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was “a pleasure to work with” during a Liverpool career hampered by injury but still winning six major trophies, explains Jürgen Klopp.

Since joining from Arsenal in the summer of 2017, Oxlade-Chamberlain made 146 appearances for the Reds, helping the club to the Premier League, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, Emirates FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Carabao Cup.

“Ox is a super boy, definitely a super boy. Now that’s a shame with Ox as is sometimes the case with players – he’s had a great time here and in the end I’m pretty sure he’s not 100% happy and I can certainly understand that,” the manager told Liverpoolfc.com.

“But the only moment that comes to mind that kinda describes the time here but also how good it is is the situation in the semi-finals of Roma, the home game, when it’s was injured. At that point, honestly, I had no idea how to replace him – Ox was so good.

“That was it: he came here, played full back at Arsenal once in a while, winger definitely and he became a real number 8 here, the way we wanted to play – super energetic, technical.”

“I remember how early we had our first final sessions and I watched and thought, ‘He hasn’t scored so many goals in the past. If I could shoot like you, I would start at 7am and finish at 9am.’” 10am because it’s amazing!’

“Then he started scoring these wonderful goals against [Manchester] City and in other important games. It was always a real pleasure to work with him, but of course an injury or two too many caused some problems.

“I love him. I once said that if I had to choose a player to go on vacation with, my first choice would probably be Ox because I’m pretty sure he’s good enough to organize things, he knows all over the world. Together with his wife, he could probably organize tickets for any event in England, maybe in Europe, and it would be absolutely fun.

“He’s a good talker and I’m pretty sure he’ll be all over TV after his career ends – which I hope will last a long time. Otherwise, the TV made a big mistake!

When asked to name his favorite moment of Oxlade-Chamberlain’s Liverpool career, Klopp replied: “There are a lot but I only remember the goal against City at home.” Falling between two players, recovering the ball and then throwing a powerful punch, and Ederson was not even close to the ball.

“It was my greatest moment in football and there have been many more.

Ox has won everything here at Liverpool FC which is amazing so he will continue to be a legend when he comes back and things like that and I’m pretty sure he brings a lot of fantastic memories with him and we’ll keep a lot of them, they will be fantastic memories with him, 100 percent.

Mauricio Pochettino has already made a number of important transfer decisions for Chelsea, although his appointment at Stamford Bridge was only officially announced on Monday.

If all goes according to plan at Chelsea, Mauricio Pochettino could be given a healthy transfer budget to sign his priority targets this summer.

The former Tottenham manager’s appointment as the Blues’ new head coach was confirmed earlier this week. However, according to football.london, a deal had been in place since early May, allowing Pochettino to complete some behind-the-scenes work already.

Apparently, among the first decisions made were the future of Joao Felix, Denis Zakaria, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mason Mount. Felix and Zakaria are set to return to Atletico Madrid and Juventus respectively after Pochettino opted not to sign either of them permanently once their loan spells expired, while Loftus-Cheek and Mount form a duo that should leave this summer.

AC Milan are in talks to sign Loftus-Cheek, while Mount’s lack of progress in contract negotiations this year will likely mean he leaves his youth club. Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal are all serious about Mount, he understands football.london.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have emerged as leaders having done more groundwork than any other club, but United are now leading the race to sign him.

Both sides don’t want an exit to happen, but it seems all but inevitable with just over a month until the summer period opens. The Blues are still asking for £70m to approve Mount’s departure and the sale of him could form a large chunk of Pochettino’s summer budget, most of which has been raised through player sales.

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea are hoping to raise a whopping £280m, across a total of 15 starts, with 10 players leaving on a fee basis, three more on loan or on free transfers and two returning to their parent club .

There needs to be a significant exodus and while Chelsea are unlikely to raise that amount, a similar total is plausible. The sheer number of players sold would allow Todd Boehly to deliver to Pochettino important sums acquired during the sale to be reinvested in the squad for earnings in line with his methods and his ideas.

Pure profit can also be made by selling homegrown stars such as Loftus-Cheek, Mount and Conor Gallagher, who will help balance Chelsea’s financial books before the June 30 FFP deadline.

Sporting CP’s Manuel Ugarte looks likely to be the first big arrival of the Pochettino era with that fast-moving deal, and the focus will therefore likely be on attacks or between the posts.

Victor Osimhen, Dusan Vlahovic and Lautaro Martinez have been proposed as strikers, while the goalkeeper’s shortlist has been narrowed down to David Raya, Andre Onana and Emiliano Martinez, according to The Guardian

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, who spoke exclusively to GIVEMESPORT, Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian is expected to remain at Anfield for one additional year.

Although he has only appeared twice in the past two seasons, the uncapped Spanish international appears to have committed his near future to the Reds.

Caoimhin Kelleher is reportedly prepared to leave Liverpool in pursuit of consistent playing time, despite the fact that Liverpool do not want to lose him.

Adrian asserted on Twitter after Liverpool’s final game of the 2022–23 season against Southampton that “great lessons” had been learned and that they will soon be back to their best.

Bayern Munich are set to make a huge offer for Declan Rice this summer, according to the Mirror. There is much speculation surrounding Rice’s future as the transfer window approaches and several reports have linked him with a move to Arsenal.

However, new Bundesliga champions Bayern could put a big wrench in the Gunners’ works. According to the report, Thomas Tuchel’s side are ready to make a $118m (£95m/€110m) bid to land the West Ham star and beat the England international’s rival from the start.

In April, Sky Sports reported that Rice was an option Liverpool were considering, but such a price was certainly out of reach.

Liverpool.com says: It would be a surprise if Rice moved to Munich. All the latest reports on his future seem to indicate that he is ready to join Arsenal.

Rice could have been a welcome addition to Liverpool this summer, although with offers in excess of $100m on the cards, he is unlikely to fit into the plans of several midfield signings. Potter warned Chelsea about star being ‘too expensive’.

Former Chelsea manager Graham Potter warned the club’s board they were “making too many signings” and insisted Enzo Fernández was “too expensive”, according to The Guardian.

Potter was sacked as Chelsea manager after just 31 games, despite the club spending more than $746m (£600m/€695m) on signings under owner Todd Boehly.

The Blues had a disastrous season, finishing 12th in the Premier League, and The Guardian suggests their former manager sought to raise concerns with the club’s board after being left with a bloated squad, including $133m (£107m / €124m) January signing of Fernandez.

Liverpool.com says: If Potter had indeed warned the Chelsea board about the signings they were making, perhaps they should have listened to him.

If Liverpool fans think their season was bad, it was nothing compared to the Blues’ season.

Mauricio Pochettino is now tasked with picking up the pieces of Chelsea’s disastrous season, and Boehly and company may have to listen to what the Argentinian has to say to them this summer.

Liverpool move quickly as their first summer transfer is negotiated by their new sporting director.

As Jurgen Klopp looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the start of the 2023–24 season, Liverpool is anticipated to be among the busiest Premier League clubs this summer.

This summer, Liverpool is considering a deal to acquire Khephren Thuram, a French midfielder.

James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Naby Keita are all expected to leave the team at the end of June, therefore Jurgen Klopp plans to bolster his midfield when the transfer window reopens. After a terrible season-long loan, Arthur will also return to Juventus.

But Klopp and the newly appointed sporting director Jorg Schmadtke are making moves to try and land their main targets quickly. Thuram has now emerged as a fan favorite at the team in southern France, appearing more than 100 times over the last four seasons. However, his most prosperous season to date was 2022–2023.

Thuram was selected to play with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year as a result of his performances. Thuram has been a bright spot in Nice’s second-best defensive unit in the division despite the team’s terrible overall season, but he is drawing interest from other teams.

Liverpool’s representatives and those of Thuram have already met. The player apparently wants to work and play for the Reds next season under Klopp. Given the situation at hand, he would provide Liverpool some much-needed presence and vigor in the middle of the field.

The current first-team midfielders for Liverpool are Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Harvey Elliott, and Curtis Jones, but Klopp needs to add more this summer. Manu Kone, Youri Tielemans, and Bruno Guimaraes are a few additional players who have been mentioned in connection with a move to Anfield.

Schmadtke acknowledges that, in terms of his mandate, it is very much a Klopp-down approach when he first lands on Merseyside on a temporary contract.
