Liverpool’s modest Premier League title hopes are enhanced by the change in European coefficients.

The Premier League's Champions League qualification race has been significantly impacted by Liverpool's Europa League elimination.

The Premier League’s Champions League qualification race has been significantly impacted by Liverpool’s Europa League elimination.

Ever since Liverpool’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League were dashed the previous season, the fans have dreamed of an appearance in the Europa League final in Dublin.

The demand for an ultimate farewell party in the Emerald Isle increased even further after Jurgen Klopp stated in January that he would be leaving his position as Reds manager at the end of the season.

But such hopes were cruelly dashed as Liverpool unexpectedly lost to Atalanta in the Europa League quarterfinals. The tournament favourites all season long, a 3-0 first leg loss at Anfield sealed their fate and guaranteed they wouldn’t even be in the running for a spot in the championship.

It is a devastating setback for the Reds, of course. On the other hand, optimists will have managed to identify some little advantages.

After all, Liverpool’s elimination guarantees that none of the three can have an advantage over their rivals when it comes to navigating a shortened schedule during the final month of the campaign, especially after Premier League title rivals Man City and Arsenal also unexpectedly exited the Champions League at the quarterfinal stage earlier this week.

There are just six league games remaining for the Gunners and the Reds, who are now two points behind league leaders City, to concentrate on and properly prepare for. In the meanwhile, Pep Guardiola’s team will aim to defend the FA Cup before facing Chelsea in this weekend’s semi-final at Wembley.

It remains to be seen whether the potential confidence blow of early European elimination is outweighed by more time spent on the training pitch and fewer minutes in legs towards the end of the season. However, as a result, none of the three have received a revised “boost.”

Their departures, meanwhile, might still have a significant impact on the outcome of the Premier League title fight this year.

It is now highly unlikely that five Premier League teams will make it into the Champions League the following season, with Aston Villa being the only English team still playing in Europe.

With Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League semifinals and Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League semifinals, Germany is now best-positioned to secure the second spot. Italy secured the first additional berth on Thursday, in part because Atalanta eliminated Liverpool.

All three German teams would need to lose both of their respective semi-finals in order for England to defeat Germany and secure the fifth qualifying slot. Aston Villa would need to win both of their Europa Conference semi-final matches against Olympiakos and then the final.

The Premier League's Champions League qualification race has been significantly impacted by Liverpool's Europa League elimination.

As a result, the Premier League’s competition for Champions League qualification is poised to heat up, with fourth place most likely holding the final qualifying position.

Right now, Aston Villa is in third place, three points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur, and eight points behind third-place Liverpool. They have, nevertheless, participated in more games than any of the other seven Premier League teams.

Even though Unai Emery’s team presently leads Spurs in goal differential (+19 to +16), a victory in that fantastic game on Thursday, May 2, against Chelsea, won’t definitely be enough to move up over the Villans.

There will be many more surprises in store for Spurs during the last month of the season, as they will also play their second game this weekend thanks to Ange Postecoglou’s team missing out on playing FA Cup semifinalists Man City.

However, it does mean that Villa and Spurs will need to work even harder to make it into the Champions League next season; finishing in fifth place is probably no longer sufficient.

Given that they still have games against the top three teams in the league, Tottenham was already expected to be a major player in the fight for the championship.

On Sunday, April 28, they will play host to Arsenal in the North London derby. On Sunday, May 5, they will travel to Anfield. On Tuesday, May 14, they play their penultimate match of the season at home against Man City.

With their own Champions League aspirations much more on the line, they may need the points in order to defeat Aston Villa and therefore reconfigure the top three. Additionally, if Liverpool is to have any chance of winning the season, they must host both Man City and Arsenal. This quietly gives them optimism.

On Monday, May 13, at Villa Park, Villa still has to host the Reds. This matchup comes four days after Villa’s away second leg of the Europa Conference League semifinal against Olympiakos.

Emery’s team can find itself in the driver’s seat following their continental exploits, riding high after making it to the European final, or crushed after losing in the semifinals. However, the reality that Villa is presently on track for an unexpected top four finish complicates matters, even if you would generally expect them to prioritise the potential to win silverware above the league.

It has been a terrible week for Premier League teams in Europe, save from Villa. However, as Liverpool tries to get back on track following their shocking Europa League quarterfinal loss, Klopp’s determination to see his team finish as two-time Premier League champions may actually be a plus for the Reds as the race for Champions League qualification heats up.

  • Arne Slot is who? The manager of Feyenoord is one of Liverpool’s new favourites, compared to Pep Guardiola.

Arne Slot is who? The manager of Feyenoord is one of Liverpool’s new favourites, compared to Pep Guardiola.

    Arne

Jürgen Klopp’s successor as manager of Liverpool is still being sought after. Arne Slot, the manager of Feyenoord, has increased his chances and emerged as a new favourite.

Liverpool is actively searching for Jürgen Klopp’s successor, albeit it is unclear who has been selected.

Many supporters had their sights set on Xabi Alonso because of his impressive play at Bayer Leverkusen as a former Reds midfielder; however, he has since withdrawn from consideration. Right now, Rúben Amorim is the front-runner, but there’s always a chance for an unexpected person to earn the job.

Liverpool maintains that it is still in the screening phase of selecting a new manager, and a left-field appointment is still on the table, according to the ECHO. Thus, it’s intriguing that one name has become the new favourite and has dramatically increased the odds of getting the position.

Arne Slot, the manager of Feyenoord, is currently third with Sky Bet, after Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi, the manager of Brighton. Although Slot’s name hasn’t been mentioned much since Klopp announced his plans in January, he is a player to watch.

The 45-year-old is becoming well-known in the Netherlands. Feyenoord, who they captained to the Eredivisie title the previous season, is still very much in the running this year, albeit PSV needs one more victory to defeat them.

Still, Slot has made an impression since taking over managerial duties. During his playing career, he played as an offensive midfielder for FC Zwolle, NAC Breda, Sparta Rotterdam, and PEC Zwolle. After retiring from football in 2013, he worked as a youth coach at PEC Zwolle before joining Cambuur as an assistant.

Arne Slot is who? The manager of Feyenoord is one of Liverpool's new favourites, compared to Pep Guardiola.

He was appointed temporary coach in 2016 alongside Sipke Hulshoff for the Leeuwarden-based team. The following year, he left the team to work as John van den Brom’s assistant at AZ Alkmaar. Subsequently, he succeeded Van den Brom as the team’s head coach.

The COVID-19 pandemic ended his first season in management too soon; with nine games left, AZ was only behind leaders Ajax on goal differential before the season was cancelled. However, Feyenoord was taking an interest in his work at the club, and later that year, after AZ had negotiated an agreement with the Rotterdam club, he was fired.

In addition to finishing third behind Ajax and PSV in their inaugural season at Feyenoord, Slot also advanced to the Europa Conference League final before losing to Roma under José Mourinho. In his second season, Slot was linked to a move to the Premier League and Feyenoord would win its first Eredivisie title since 2017.

He had apparently been considered for the Leeds United position earlier in the year, and he was tipped for the open Tottenham position last summer. However, Slot would ultimately agree to a new contract that would keep him at Feyenoord until 2026.

In recent years, Slot’s offensive style of play has drawn attention and led to comparisons with Pep Guardiola (via TalkSport). Furthermore, he has already decided that the Premier League will be his next stop.

He declared last year (via Sky Sports) that “a club in Holland will not be my next step.” “I’ve failed miserably if that’s what I’m supposed to do next. The next logical step would be to travel overseas, because the Premier League is, in my opinion, the greatest league in the world.”

And Slot didn’t completely rule out taking over as Liverpool’s manager after Klopp’s January statement when questioned about the prospect. “What explanation can I offer for why it won’t make headlines? Thus, the next query!,” Slot stated through Voetbal Primeur.

The 45-year-old may be a name to watch in the upcoming weeks as he is already eager to join the Premier League. But for the time being, Klopp’s replacement is still being sought after.

  • Why the manager of Atalanta could be the ideal successor to Michael Edwards at Liverpool

Why the manager of Atalanta could be the ideal successor to Michael Edwards at Liverpool

    Gian Piero Gasperini

After Atalanta eliminated Liverpool from the Europa League on Thursday, the Italian team’s manager is now being considered as a possible candidate as the Reds search for a replacement for Jurgen Klopp.

Gian Piero Gasperini might surprise everyone by running for manager of Liverpool after the Reds’ Europa League exit.

In the championship quarterfinals, Gasperini guided his Atalanta team to an aggregate victory over Jurgen Klopp’s team of players, 3-1. The Serie A team’s remarkable 3-0 victory away at Anfield in the first leg served as the cornerstone of their advancement.

Since taking over for La Dea in 2016, the Italian has guided the team to their best-ever finishing place. They have finished in third place three times since then and have been a constant in European competition.

The best teams haven’t paid much attention to Gasperini’s work, but a convincing victory over the Premier League championship contenders has drawn attention. And since Klopp is stepping down at the end of the season, he might be the ideal choice to lead Liverpool as their new manager.

Michael Edwards, Anfield’s recently hired Chief Executive of Football, is spearheading the hunt. Thus far, Edwards has concentrated on creating a staff that embodies his vision for recruitment, hiring Richard Hughes as sporting director from Bournemouth.

Why the manager of Atalanta could be the ideal successor to Michael Edwards at Liverpool

With the assurance that he will have complete authority over the transfer market, Edwards has been lured back to Liverpool. He terminated his previous stint there in 2022 as Klopp expanded his influence over hiring.

Gasperini would be the ideal choice in that regard because the Italian would concentrate on coaching. Former Atalanta Head of Football Lee Congerton claims that the seasoned manager gives the recruitment team complete control.

“There is no connection between [Gian Piero] Gasperini and any of the players,” Congerton informed the Daily Telegraph. When you ask for his advice, all he says is to sell anybody you want as long as the people you bring in are superior to the ones you sold. It’s easy.

“The owner, Antonio Percassi, was a professional athlete. And there’s Stephen Pagliuca and his guys from America. Though they are businesspeople, they have a passion for sports. Their goal is to triumph.

It looks like Liverpool is eager to adopt that arrangement. And after addressing the connections to the Liverpool position before to the second leg, it seems like Gasperini would be open to an approach.

“Leadership rumours about me replacing Klopp at Liverpool please me, of course, but I’m more concerned about the football. We have to concentrate on the next games; we can’t be sidetracked by these kinds of linkages or articles,” he stated.

They have a very specific sense of who they are. We will need to play a fantastic game to win, therefore I’m expecting the finest Liverpool team I can muster, a team that will come here to play for all their opportunities.”

Five talking points as Jurgen Klopp bids adieu to Europe and Liverpool fails to mount a comeback

Liverpool's dreams of winning a triple have been dashed after losing to Atalanta in the Europa League.

ATALANTA 0-1 LIVERPOOL (3-1 agg.): Mo Salah’s early strike gave Liverpool a narrow victory in Bergamo, but it was insufficient to allow them to mount a valiant recovery.

Liverpool’s dreams of winning a triple have been dashed after losing to Atalanta in the Europa League.

After falling to the Italian team 3-0 at Anfield last week, the Reds faced a formidable challenge. For a few moment, it appeared as though they could pull off the unbelievable, as Mo Salah’s penalty in the seventh minute handed Liverpool the ideal start in Bergamo.

The Reds, however, did not pose quite enough of a threat as Atalanta held their Premier League opponents at a distance. Liverpool now returns their focus to playing at home and winning the league.

Atalanta advances to the semi-finals and will face either Benfica or Marseille there. Here are all the talking points from Liverpool’s challenging evening in Bergamo:

    Liverpool has a fantastic start.

Liverpool's dreams of winning a triple have been dashed after losing to Atalanta in the Europa League.

Atalanta could only become anxious if they were to find the net first. Salah of Liverpool accomplished just that. Matteo Ruggeri’s arm stopped Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross, giving the Reds a spot-kick.

Salah took ownership of the game and scored expertly to cut his team’s deficit to two goals. The attacking intent of Klopp’s team was evident from the beginning as they piled on their Italian opponents. Salah’s attempt went miles wide of the goal just before the half, even though he should have scored another.

    Atlanta flees in red

Shortly after Salah’s goal, Liverpool appeared to be about to double their lead when Luis Diaz was allowed in behind. The Colombian appeared to be going through one-on-one.

As the ball bounced up, Isak Hien reached out an arm to stop it in its course. Naturally, the majority of the Liverpool team called for a red card, but the referee wasn’t persuaded and only sent out a yellow.

Hien lingered on the pitch. The Reds may also view that incident as a turning point because they could have tied the game with two more goals if he hadn’t been on the pitch.

Fluency is a challenge for Liverpool.

Even though Atalanta appeared to be improving early on, they were able to stop Liverpool’s onslaught quickly. The Reds appeared like a completely different team after the break and produced nothing close to enough to mount a comeback.

Nothing that could be called a “golden chance,” but there were a few intriguing exchanges and a clutch of balls in the behind. It’s an issue that Liverpool is beginning to pay for.

The last three games have seen just one goal scored by Klopp’s team. If they want to stay in the running for the Premier League, they need to find their creative spark again, and quickly.

Klopp’s tenure at Liverpool in Europe is over

Liverpool's dreams of winning a triple have been dashed after losing to Atalanta in the Europa League.

It’s official: as manager of Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp has overseen his final European match. But for the Reds, wow, what a roller coaster. Three finals for the Champions League, one winning.

A Europa League final was also held there. Not to mention the historic victories at Anfield against Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund.

Even though Klopp was unable to pull off yet another incredible comeback, he will be pleased with his work in placing the Reds back among Europe’s best.

    Gasperini provides a hint

    Gasperini

Regarding the Liverpool bench, there are several candidates vying to succeed Klopp. Gian Piero Gasperini, the manager of Atalanta, is one of those names, and he has done no harm at all to his chances.

Atalanta was well-organized, disciplined, and accomplished enough to barely pass. They are still a very excellent football team and should have found a way past the Reds, even though they are not as daring as they were in the past. This is how Liverpool would appear in the upcoming season, assuming Gasperini is appointed.

In football, two weeks is a long period.

Liverpool led the league by two points going into the weekend before their Premier League trip to Manchester United.

On paper, a quarterfinal matchup with Atalanta in the Europa League and a possible semifinal matchup with either Marseille or Benfica appeared favourable.

In honour of Jurgen Klopp’s final campaign on the Merseyside, it signified a triple was in store for Liverpool.

After a 3-1 aggregate loss to Italian team Atalanta, they were eliminated from Europe and now sit in third place in the Premier League, two points behind champions Manchester City, following a draw at Old Trafford and a loss to Crystal Palace.

Liverpool has won the Carabao Cup this year, but before the German coach leaves on May 19, they can only give Klopp another Premier League triumph.

Don Hutchison, a former midfielder for Liverpool, said on TNT Sports, “I see a team that is playing under stress. It is weighing on them.”

“They are a team under pressure – they are trying to finish off the season because of Jurgen Klopp’s farewell.”

Liverpool won the Carabao Cup and had accrued 22 of the 27 possible points in the Premier League between Klopp’s announcement on January 26 and the current downturn, although they had been eliminated from the FA Cup.

Peter Crouch, a former striker with the Reds, stated: “They have had a challenging week. They’ll celebrate their victory away from home in a challenging location, but right now, it is a little worrying.”

“You’ll pay for missing out on opportunities if you keep doing so.”

Liverpool: To win the Premier League, Jurgen Klopp's team must be "flawless" and "stress free" in playing.

They were hoping to overcome a 3-0 first-leg deficit against Atalanta in Italy thanks to Mohamed Salah’s penalty kick in the seventh minute, but they were unable to take advantage of it or gain any momentum.

They managed just two shots in the second half and have now gone 360 minutes in all competitions without scoring from open play.

“I don’t think they had answers to Atalanta’s defensive plans,” Crouch stated. “I don’t believe they had enough creative confidence in themselves. It was depressing.

In the first half of their draw with Manchester United, Klopp’s team had 15 shots, and in their weekend loss to Palace, they had 26. Both times, they were guilty of squandering excellent opportunities.

Former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister responded, “Absolutely, but they are creating chances,” when asked if their current drought was troubling. You will pay a price if you consistently pass up great opportunities, as was the case previously.”

“Everyone is needed for the final push.”

In the Premier League, Liverpool plays Fulham on Sunday. Over the following nine days, they visit Everton and West Ham.

Liverpool may have built up a four-point lead to exert some pressure because the first two of those games are scheduled before Manchester City’s next Premier League game.

Klopp said to TNT Sports, “We have to focus on the league and that is exactly what we will do from now on.” “We will throw ourselves into that completely.”

Captain Virgil van Dijk continued, saying, “The key to this is demonstrating maturity and unity because we have all gone through difficult times together.

“Everyone is needed right now for the league’s last push. We really need our fans now more than ever because anything is still possible, so hopefully they will be present.

Liverpool’s odds of winning the Premier League are 12% according to Opta and 10% based on Gracenote’s Euro Club Index.

McAllister stated, “They’ve got six cup finals, effectively.”

“There isn’t time to be a sucker. The older players must rally the entire team and declare, “We have six games left.”

Hutchison went on, “They must be perfect. You can tell that City can win every game because they are in control and appear almost perfect.

“The game at Fulham at the weekend isn’t a game that you can be confident they [Liverpool] can win with the way they are playing at the moment and missing chances.”

Liverpool Injury News: A key defender is out till May

The ankle injury that Liverpool defender Conor Bradley sustained during Sunday's unexpected Premier League loss to Crystal Palace

Liverpool suffered an injury blow when a crucial defender was absent.

Player out till the beginning of May due to an ankle issue

When playing Atalanta, Jurgen Klopp has a selection issue.

The ankle injury that Liverpool defender Conor Bradley sustained during Sunday’s unexpected Premier League loss to Crystal Palace is anticipated to keep him out of action for the remainder of April.

Since January, Bradley has established himself as a regular starter for Liverpool and has shown promise. In fact, his rise may have contributed to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s decision to move permanently into midfield in order to take full advantage of his passing range.

However, during Palace’s visit, the 20-year-old was forced off early in the second half. Alexander-Arnold, making his first appearance since February after recovering from a knee injury, took his place.

The ankle injury that Liverpool defender Conor Bradley sustained during Sunday's unexpected Premier League loss to Crystal Palace

Bradley’s ankle injury is expected to keep him out of the lineup for up to three weeks, which means he might not be eligible for selection until late May. This eliminates the Northern Ireland international from the upcoming Premier League matches against Fulham, Everton, and West Ham United as well as Thursday’s Europa League quarterfinal second leg against Atalanta.

Bradley may also still be questionable for Tottenham Hotspur’s May 5 visit to Anfield, which also happens to be Jurgen Klopp’s farewell game at the stadium before he departs.

It suggests that Alexander-Arnold might start the match in Bergamo against Atalanta, where Liverpool will have a difficult time winning the tie after suffering a shocking 3-0 loss in the first leg the previous week.

If Klopp is unwilling to take a chance on Alexander-Arnold right away—especially with Bradley sidelined and the Premier League title fight intensifying—he can instead start Joe Gomez, who is a versatile player. The England international, who had previously played at right-back many times this season, lost his spot as a stand-in on the left when Andrew Robertson recently returned to full fitness.

Once more, Liverpool's misfit on loan scores; he now has seven goals in ten appearances.

On loan from Liverpool to Hull City, Fabio Carvalho continued his incredible scoring streak in the Championship on Saturday with another goal.

Hull City defeated Queen’s Park Rangers 2-0 on Saturday thanks to another goal from Fabio Carvalho. With so, he continues his incredible recent record in the Championship.

The Portuguese playmaker scored a wonderful goal after running deep behind the QPR defence to take advantage of a through-ball. Then, for a 2-0 lead, the Liverpool loanee swept it home with abandon.

Carvalho has now made 16 appearances for Hull and scored eight goals, but his current form is even better. Ultimately, he needed a few games to get comfortable.

Carvalho, however, has seven strikes in his last ten games. In addition, he has scored five goals in his last six games and four in his previous four.

The 21-year-old has also routinely scored significant goals. There were braces against Cardiff City in a 3-1 victory, strikes that saved points against West Brom and Leicester City, and the game-winning goal against Southampton.

It’s just what the athlete needed after such an absurdly bad start to the season. That might even be sufficient to save his Liverpool career.

    THE FUTURE OF FABIO CARVALHO

Carvalho was projected to be a great player on loan at RB Leipzig, where he spent the first part of the season. Rather, he played in just 158 Bundesliga minutes over the course of six months.

Something had to give. Carvalho was relegated back to the Championship by Liverpool, where he played some of his greatest games of the season.

It’s turned out to be a brilliant move. In his first season at Anfield, Carvalho was a bit of an oddball, if only because manager Jurgen Klopp believed he needed dependable, established numbers during a challenging campaign.

However, Carvalho’s loan with Hull demonstrates that his talent is still very much present, and at age 21, there is still time for him to succeed at Liverpool. If he wanted a chance to impress the new manager in preseason, he had to perform well in the second half of the season, and we believe he has now earned that opportunity.

The main cause of Liverpool’s dreadful week was emerged

The main cause of Liverpool's dreadful week was emerged

Liverpool has dropped points in the Premier League championship chase and is headed for an exit from the Europa League quarterfinals after losing twice and drawing once in the previous eight days.

After a 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Sunday, Jurgen Klopp’s team lost badly, 3-0, to Atalanta in the first leg of their Europa League quarterfinal match.

Then, on Sunday afternoon, Crystal Palace’s goal from Eberechi Eze was sufficient to give them a thrilling 1-0 victory over Liverpool.

Liverpool now sits third in the Premier League standings and needs to overcome a three-goal deficit to advance to the next round of the European Cup.

The Reds’ finishing in front of goal was a major concern against Man United and Crystal Palace, and it was also a problem against Atalanta.

    The main issue facing Liverpool
Liverpool has amassed 9.14 xG in their last three games, but they have only managed three goals. Their poor finishing may have cost them two trophies.

Liverpool’s lack of creativity over the previous week has been unexpected given the abundance of great forwards they have on their roster, but this little error might have put an end to the Reds’ hopes of winning the Premier League and Europa League during Klopp’s farewell tour.

The main cause of Liverpool's dreadful week was emerged

Although Liverpool had a number of excellent chances to put the game out of sight in the second half, Palace deserves praise for their heroic last-ditch defending at Anfield. But in their pursuit of their second Premier League title ever, they lost three crucial points due to their wastefulness in front of goal.

It’s interesting to note that Liverpool lost its first two games at Anfield—against Atalanta and Crystal Palace—to teams that employed the 3-4-2-1 formation. Liverpool was just too simple to play through in both games, and Atalanta and Crystal Palace revelled in launching quick assaults.

Liverpool has had an incredible season thus far, but their terrible finishing is a major problem, and their two losses against teams who use a back three raise tactical concerns. They might even lose out on this campaign’s quest for cutlery as a result.

An eight-year team veteran is expected to leave Liverpool during the summer transfer window. His only separation from an exit is a medical.

Joel Matip has been offered to Fenerbahce by his agents, according to Turkish publication Sabah. The defender’s contract expires at the end of the current campaign, and this rumour claims Liverpool will not extend it.

Fenerbahce is interested in signing him, which creates an opening. But before any settlement is made, there’s a clear standoff.

Matip is not likely to play again this season after suffering an ACL tear months ago. He should be back to normal by June, but nobody can promise that until they have a medical report.

Fenerbahce will therefore have to wait for the findings of a report before making a formal bid for Matip. Everything else depends on his fitness, even if it is commonly anticipated that he will depart Liverpool at the end of his contract.

Joel Matip is headed out of Liverpool.

Matip is leaving with a heavy heart, and it’s completely unwarranted. Given his advanced age and the uncertainty surrounding his long-term fitness, we do believe he will depart, but things really shouldn’t be this way.

Being one of Jurgen Klopp’s first signings and coming on a free transfer, Matip has been an amazing helper. Fewer signings have been better, and perhaps none better financially.

However, the manager’s change solidifies the departure. We’re not sure if Matip needs to sign a new contract on such harsh terms, but we wonder what would happen if he did.

If Matip can demonstrate his fitness, many teams will be willing to take a chance on him because of his excellent calibre throughout the previous eight seasons. He should be able to make a wise move, and hopefully he will

  • Jurgen Klopp and his successor are facing significant challenges from Liverpool in two areas.

Jurgen Klopp and his successor are facing significant challenges from Liverpool in two areas.

    Ian Doyle

The Ian Doyle analysis following Liverpool’s humiliating 1-0 Premier League home loss to Crystal Palace

    Attack need overhaul

Like every assault, there was bound to be a time when Liverpool’s prolific forward line would cease to produce goals. However, it is rare that it occurred at such a bad moment.

The Reds were once again undone by their wastefulness after squandering opportunities to win at Manchester United the previous weekend and then having enough opportunity to give themselves a fighting chance for the Europa League quarterfinal second leg against Atalanta on Thursday.

For those who place a lot of weight on these arbitrary measurements, Liverpool’s xG (expected goals) total of 2.87 was the highest for a Premier League game in which they failed to score since records for such metrics were kept in 2010. In fact, no side has been so wasteful since Brighton two years ago.

Even though each forward line member still had a fair chance to score, it is concerning that they appear just as worn out as the rest of the team. Goalkeeper Dean Henderson of Palace made some unintentionally excellent stops to deny Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, and he also denied a late shot from Mohamed Salah.

Henderson was nowhere to be found, and only fellow substitute Cody Gakpo had any genuine energy among the forwards. Even Diogo Jota had a chance to score but was denied by a block from former Liverpool player Nathaniel Clyne. Jota and Gakpo are also expected to arrive in Italy on Thursday. It’s time to relaunch the offensive.

    Alisson deserves more.

The Ian Doyle analysis following Liverpool's humiliating 1-0 Premier League home loss to Crystal Palace

When Liverpool’s player of the year, Alisson Becker, suffered a serious hamstring injury more than two months ago, there was concern among some that the team’s season would have collapsed.

Therefore, it would have come as a pleasant surprise to many if the Reds had entered the most recent round of games tied for first place at the Premier League summit.

Although Caoimhin Kelleher has played well to solidify his position as perhaps the nation’s best number two goalie, Alisson is the top goalie in the world for a reason, as evidenced by his incredible save of Jean-Philippe Mateta at point blank range in the second half.

However, there was little the Brazilian could do to stop Crystal Palace’s goal, as Liverpool let the visitors kick the ball around unopposed until it dropped for an unmarked Ebererchi Eze to score.

The Reds’ current record of nine Premier League games at Anfield without a clean sheet is now equal to their longest streak of any team in the tournament when it comes to home losses. Additionally, it meant that in half of Klopp’s team’s 32 Premier League games this season, his team has trailed at some point.

That is just untenable for a squad that wants to win a championship, and the new manager should definitely address this.

Trent and Jones draw attention to an issue

The Ian Doyle analysis following Liverpool's humiliating 1-0 Premier League home loss to Crystal Palace

The joke from earlier in the week implied that it was standard Liverpool fare to come out of an injury crisis only to deteriorate further. However, recent performance demonstrates the problem Klopp had previously mentioned—that is, the necessity of reintegrating players into a team following an extended period of time away from the pitch.

For instance, Curtis Jones made his first Premier League start in two months, and the result left the crowd furious as he missed two excellent second-half opportunities. Would one of those opportunities have been converted by a more match-sharp Jones? Considering his pre-injury form, it’s rather likely.

As a replacement for the injured Conor Bradley, Trent Alexander-Arnold made his first appearance since mid-February, albeit an early one.

Even though he was understandably rusty, he was still able to display some of the inventiveness that made him such a valuable player in the first few games of the campaign.

And Alexander-Arnold will play a big part once more if Liverpool are to win anything in the final weeks.

With a 1-0 setback to Crystal Palace at Anfield, Liverpool’s title chances were dealt a serious blow. Jurgen Klopp’s team now has a busy week ahead of them as they try to get back on track.

Anfield is under increasing pressure following a terrible week for Liverpool.

The Reds’ chances of qualifying for Europe are in jeopardy following a 3-0 loss to Atlanta at Anfield. Mario Pasalic also found the net, while Gianluca Scamacca scored twice.

Then came another crushing defeat for Jurgen Klopp’s team, this time at the hands of Crystal Palace. Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League title were put in risk when Eberechi Eze scored the game’s winning goal for the Eagles.

It will now be a big week for Klopp to get Liverpool back on track. Check out all of the Anfield news stories from the last 24 hours:

Klopp calls it “lashes out” Red stars

According to Jurgen Klopp, his team disregarded his orders to give Crystal Palace a “horrible” performance. The Eagles scythed through the Reds several times before the Reds lost 1-0.

“If you would look to my teams over the years, I think you could say our pressing is usually good,” Klopp remarked following the final whistle. There is counterpress.

“We were all like, ‘How can that happen?’ in the first half. Curtis Jones was the only one who was actually pursuing, breaking their rhythm occasionally, and getting out. Apart from that, Palace could simply continue playing. Watching Liverpool was an awful experience.

Darwin Nunez, a striker for Liverpool, was seen angrily stomping his seat after his team lost a fantastic opportunity to beat Crystal Palace. After being replaced, the Uruguayan striker was observing from the sidelines.

Curtis Jones, a midfielder, had a clear opportunity to equalise but for some reason,

Curtis Jones, the midfield player, had a clear opportunity to equalise but mishandled his shot. Nunez vented his annoyance on one of Liverpool’s bench seats after spotting his opportunity.

Not just him, though, expressed his rage. Twitter was also used by Liverpool supporters to discuss Jones’ egregious error.

    Keita leaves.

Although there are currently problems at Anfield, Werder Bremen may also be experiencing similar issues. Naby Keita, a former star of Liverpool, now plays for the German squad. He left his teammates after discovering he was not included in the starting lineup against Bayer Leverkusen.

Clemens Fritz, sporting director of Werder Bremen, stated: “Naby chose to stay home rather than board the bus after learning yesterday that he would not be playing from the beginning. Tomorrow, we will discuss the options and potential outcomes with him and his representative.”

Keita left Liverpool in the summer and signed with Bremen. However, he’s only played in five games, and only one of those games was a start.

The most recent candidate to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool is Niko Kovac. Who is he?

Another manager has added his name to the list of possible successors to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool in the summer. Niko Kovac is his name.

After leaving Wolfsburg earlier this season, Kovac is reportedly a surprise candidate that the Reds management is considering, according to the Daily Mail.

Liverpool is apparently in the process of completing a thorough research stage, gathering information and statistics on their chosen candidates, but they have not yet officially started conversations with contenders as they look to replace Jurgen Klopp in the summer.

After initial favourite Xabi Alonso wrote himself out of the running, Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim is reportedly top of the priority list. However, the former Portuguese international recently denied rumours that talks between him and the Merseyside club were even in the advanced stages, let alone underway.

In recent months, other players including Julian Nagelsmann, Thomas Tuchel, and Roberto De Zerbi have also been connected to the Liverpool position.

Kovac is apparently the most recent name Liverpool has reportedly considered, suggesting that they are still open to new options. You should know the following about him.

    “NIKO KOVAC”: WHO IS HE?

The most recent candidate to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool is Niko Kovac. Who is he?

Since retiring in 2009, Kovac, a former captain of the Croatian national team, has amassed a remarkable managerial career.

He took charge of his senior national team in 2013 after having managed the Croatia U21s, and after a stressful and controversial playoff period, he managed them to qualify for the 2014 World Cup.

In 2016, he transitioned from playing international football to club football, accepting a position with Eintracht Frankfurt in an attempt to establish a coaching career in Germany, the nation in which he had enjoyed considerable success as a player.

This was Kovac’s first truly memorable moment as a manager. After leading Frankfurt to victory in the 2018 DFB-Pokal final, they won their first silverware since 1988.

Clutching the championship from reigning champions Bayern Munich, it would turn out to be a fruitful trial for his prospective employers.

Former Bayern player Kovac took over as manager in the summer of 2018 after famous coach Jupp Heynckes retired. In his first season, Kovac guided the team to a league and cup double.

Even though he appeared to be at the top of his game, everything would fall apart fast. His second stint as manager didn’t go quite as well, and in October he was fired following a beating at the hands of his former team, Frankfurt.

Since then, there have been stints at Wolfsburg and Monaco, both of which saw varying degrees of success. Having left the Volkswagen Arena in March, he has not had a job.

A positional play-focused manager who enjoys occupying the vertical and horizontal lanes and building up from the back, his strategies would differ from Klopp’s ‘gegenpressen’ approach.

Even so, he is still a viable option with elite level experience, and considering that he is a free agent, it makes sense for Liverpool to at least have him on the long list of possible successors.
