CM: Enzo Fernandez – Well, he might not be in the penalty shootout anymore, but he will definitely be in the starting XI. One of the highlights of Chelsea’s early games, especially against Liverpool, and it will only get better once he forms a partnership with Caicedo. LM: Ben Chilwell – While Gusto and Chilwell can perform more like full-backs at times, their forward roles will make them wingers when Chelsea are in possession. Chilwell was incredibly forward in his opening matches and it showed the qualities of him on the left wing.

AM: Raheem Sterling – Chelsea’s best player ever against West Ham and looked back at the electric best of him. Pochettino seems to have the better of the former Manchester City.

AM: Mykhailo Mudryk – He came on after Carney Cukwuemeka’s injury against West Ham and could be offered his first start of the season. Mudryk still looks a bit lost in the Premier League but has shown flashes of his qualities.

ST: Nicolas Jackson – The striker has already proven himself to be an absolute handful for opposition defenders but he needs to add a bigger end product.

Currently, Lewis Hall, Marc Cucurella, and Ian Maatsen are all viable options for the Blues to choose from on the left side of the defense. Recent games featured Hall in his preferred position in central midfield, which may provide an indication of what Pochettino has in store for the 18-year-old going forward.

The Cobham graduate’s abilities at left-back are, however, well known to us.

The 20-year-old has returned from a season-long loan at Brighton and Hove Albion, but Chelsea aren’t looking to sell him.

According to the Athletic, it was a lucky escape for the Londoners not to permanently lose Colwill when they acquired full-back Marc Cucurella from Brighton in August 2022 for £56 million. Cucurella can also play center-back in a back three. If the 20-year-old does become a transferable player, he would only go on loan, with the Seagulls, who have had offers turned down, now rivaling Liverpool.

After sending the center back to the South coast, they acquired Wesley Fofana from Leicester City for £70 million before acquiring Benoit Badiashile from Monaco for £35 million in January. Spending £194 million on four players who will all play the same position is probably not the best course of action if you want to persuade a highly-rated young player that he has a future at your club.

Sadly, Koulibaly would only play for Stamford Bridge for one season.
According to reports, Chelsea was willing to offload the highly paid Senegalese because it could give Colwill more guarantees.
The player was sold to Al-Hilal for about £20 million last month.

Chelsea are undoubtedly starting to make room in defense with the free transfer of club captain Cesar Axpilicueta to Atletico Madrid. The only issue for the Liverpool target is that Pochettino’s first team squad still includes senior center backs like Fofana, Badiashile, Thiago Silva, Trevor Chalobah, and Malang Sarr.

Reece James and Cucurella are still options for a back three, but Pochettino prefers a conventional back four in the end. No matter the system, there is fierce competition at Stamford Bridge for center-back positions.

Fofana, Badiashile, and Chalobah are all under 22 years old, while Sarr and Thiago Silva are both 38 years old. Colwill must split up Chelsea’s existing £105 million center-back pairing in order to get the opportunities he wants.

Rotational opportunities will also be scarce because of this season’s failure to qualify for Europe. Is the young center-back really interested in the idea of waiting in the wings in anticipation of more scuffles while hoping that the soon-to-be 39-year-old Thiago Silva will leave or retire?

In contrast, if he were to sign for Liverpool, he would be given the chance to start in the Europa League and both domestic cups in addition to providing Andy Robertson with a backup option at left-back/left-center-back. Additionally, Virgil van Dijk’s long-term replacement would be developed for him.

Chelsea will be hoping that Pochettino is better positioned to stop fellow academy graduate Colwill from feeling the same and following in the footsteps of England international Mason Mount after a year of making the midfielder feel unwanted. Mason Mount was already lost to Manchester United after a year of making the player feel unwanted.

Although keeping Colwill on staff serves Chelsea’s interests, the defender may not be best served by staying put.

Moving Koulibaly out of the way to make room for the center back is a start, but the fact that he was signed in the first place last summer at Colwill’s expense, only to be released after one season, demonstrates the chaotic lack of forward planning at Stamford Bridge. Before the player decides how to proceed with his future, there are obviously still many issues to be resolved in their discussions with Pochettino.

Liverpool’s only option at this point is to keep an eye on his situation and wait for a potential opportunity.
