    Lewis Koumas

Lewis Koumas has made a strong start on loan at Stoke City, quickly becoming a standout player at the bet365 Stadium with some impressive performances.

The 18-year-old Koumas has had an eventful year, making his senior debuts for Liverpool and Wales, netting his first goal at Anfield, and securing a new long-term contract.

His success has continued into his loan spell with Stoke City in the Championship. The forward has scored twice and provided an assist in five appearances, capturing the attention of fans with his dynamic play across the attack.

Koumas first made an impression on Liverpool fans in February, when Jurgen Klopp gave him his debut in the FA Cup fifth round against Southampton. He didn’t shy away from the occasion, scoring in a 3-0 victory and showcasing his considerable potential.

Since then, Koumas has also debuted for Wales, earning his third cap last Friday with an 18-minute appearance in the 0-0 Nations League draw against Turkey.

To get insights into Koumas’ performance at Stoke, Liverpool.com spoke with Pete Smith, Stoke City reporter for the Stoke Sentinel. Smith praised Koumas’ early impact at the bet365 Stadium.

What are your initial thoughts on Lewis Koumas at Stoke City?

“He’s hit the ground running, sharp and confident, quick and skillful. From his debut in the Carabao Cup at Carlisle, he was eager to take on defenders and shoot. He’s played across the frontline—on the left, right, and centrally—scoring a couple of well-taken goals and potentially could have scored more. It’s been a very promising start.”

    Lewis Koumas

Have any strengths or weaknesses been evident in his early performances?

“His pace, both on and off the ball, is particularly exciting. Last weekend at Plymouth, he had a moment reminiscent of Thierry Henry vs. Jamie Carragher, sprinting past his full-back to create a chance. He likes to shoot early and gets into dangerous positions. He’s working on building his stamina to maintain his impact throughout the game.”

How have the fans reacted to him?

“It’s easy to get excited about a dynamic forward like Koumas. He’s become a topic of much discussion, especially after scoring in a home defeat to West Brom, where he could have had a hat-trick on another day.”

Do you foresee him being a key player and regular starter, or will he need to be patient?

“The forward line is well-stocked, so it will be interesting to see how it all evolves. There’s optimism around Bae Junho and Million Manhoef, both promising young talents, and Tom Cannon, the Everton youth player on loan from Leicester. However, it’s clear Koumas will see plenty of action this season. While he may not play every minute, he has the potential to make a significant impact.”

What are Stoke’s goals for this season, and how crucial is Koumas to their success?

“Stoke has been in the bottom half of the league for six years since Premier League relegation, so the goal is to break out of that pattern this season. Staying in the top half would open up possibilities, as the competition between teams from third to 18th is tight.

Players who can deliver moments of individual brilliance could be crucial, and Koumas might just be one of those players. The squad has undergone significant changes over the summer, becoming much younger, and there’s a palpable excitement among the players. The season should be an exciting one.”

Lewis Koumas signs new deal with Liverpool and goes on loan to a Championship club  The forward for Liverpool, Lewis Koumas

The forward for Liverpool, Lewis Koumas, signed a new deal before going out on loan, therefore he will be spending the season acquiring experience in the Championship.

Because of his status as one of Liverpool’s top offensive prospects, Koumas has spent the preseason playing with the first team.

However, the Welshman has been sent out on loan since it seems doubtful that he will make an impact at this point given the calibre of forwards Arne Slot has at his disposal.

The 18-year-old, who had earlier signed a new long-term deal with Liverpool, has joined Stoke City, a Championship team, for the 2024–2025 campaign.

Koumas will be able to expand his experience travelling and playing frequently twice a week in England’s second division by joining Steven Schumacher’s team.

Without an injury crisis, it would not have been available at Liverpool, and Slot will naturally be wanting to avoid that this season.

Last season, Koumas made eight appearances in the matchday squad after emerging under pressure under Jurgen Klopp and scoring on his FA Cup debut against Southampton.

Klopp gave Jayden Danns more chances, probably because of his stronger build, but Koumas has a lot of potential ahead of him.

During the United States trip, Slot played 17 minutes off the bench against Real Betis after playing 30 minutes in the unofficial first friendly of the summer against Preston at the AXA Training Centre.

But now that he is ranked behind players like Fabio Carvalho, Ben Doak, and Harvey Blair, he can focus on improving in the Championship.

Liverpool has verified the left-back. Luke Chambers has agreed to spend the season on loan with Wigan Athletic, a team in League One.

Luke Chambers will play the season on loan at Wigan Athletic, according to confirmation from Liverpool. After playing with the Latics for the second half of the previous season, Chambers has temporarily switched to the League One team.

The 20-year-old left-back will pair up with Calvin Ramsay, a Reds teammate who joined Shaun Maloney’s squad earlier in the summer on a season-long loan.

Having played for Liverpool since he was six years old, Chambers made his debut in the first part of the previous campaign before spending eighteen months on loan at Wigan.

After making his first-team Liverpool debut as a late substitute in the team’s September League Cup third-round victory over Leicester City, he went on to start in the team’s October Europa League group victory over Toulouse.

After starting the first game of the previous season as a substitute for the first team twice, Chambers came off the bench against LASK at home. He also made a second start in the 2-1 loss at Union Saint-Gilloise. In all, Chambers was on the bench four times in the Premier League.

During the second half of 2022–2023 the England under–20 international made more impressions while on loan at Kilmarnock, a Scottish Premiership team.

Goalie Fabian Mrozek of the Academy last month went on loan to Swedish team IF Brommapojkarna, with a term of January.

Next month, the most recent Liverpool player to make their debut under Jurgen Klopp is expected to depart from the team.

Next month, Jurgen Klopp’s final Liverpool player to receive a debut is scheduled for release. In March, Mateusz Musialowski made his debut for the German boss in a 6-1 Europa League victory over Sparta Prague at Anfield, making him the 56th player under the age of 20 to do so.

This season, Klopp has also granted teenage debuts to Lewis Koumas, Jayden Danns, Trey Nyoni, James McConnell, Luke Chambers, and Calum Scanlon. With just one first-team appearance under his belt, Musialowski’s stint at Anfield is about to come to an end.

The 20-year-old Pole left SMS Lodz to join Liverpool in August 2020, and the following July, he committed to a three-year professional deal. However, the midfielder known as the “Polish Messi” back home has failed to establish himself as a regular member of Merseyside’s senior squad.

The dynamic attacker Musialowski will be free to sign with another team as a free agent for the duration of his career, despite having some impressive junior statistics (18 goals in 31 games for the under-18s and 11 in 45 for the under-21s).

According to Anfield, Liverpool might extend an offer of a new deal to the Poland under-21 international, but merely as a formality to make sure they get paid for allowing him to depart.

It was two months ago when Klopp gave Musialowski 16 minutes off the bench and stated, “Mateusz, I have to say, deserved it as well, that’s how it us.” He was with us for a few weeks during his training, and suddenly he wasn’t. The players’ growth varies.

Liverpool prepared to release an 'exceptional' player Jurgen Klopp made his debut two months ago

“He’s a really gifted player, but we obviously have a unique perspective on the game. He was getting it more and more, so I believe he’s ready now. He clearly had a choice, so I reasoned, “Come on, let’s give him these few minutes; he’s already waited long enough.”

Before the deal fell through, the teenage left-footed winger was set to join TSV Hartberg in Austria last summer. For a considerable amount of time, numerous Polish clubs have expressed interest in returning Musialowski to his native country.

However, Cezary Kucharski, Musialowski’s agent, stated in November that the player would rather go somewhere else. “We signed a contract that stated I wouldn’t try to convince him to go back to Poland,” he stated.

“He has the most offers from his own Poland, but I don’t want to convince him to go back there. Most teams are interested in him. The Netherlands, Belgium, or perhaps Switzerland should get it, in my opinion.”

Barry Lewtas, the manager of the under-21 team, was all praise for Musialowski last October: “He’s been brilliant.” Without a doubt, his level of consistency has increased this season. He’s assuming greater accountability for his overall performance.

“He now gives his all to every aspect of the game. He plays a powerful and committed defensive game. There is no denying his skill at dribbling the ball; he can outshine most players, but he is starting to play with true consistency.”

During the January transfer window, Musialowski was connected to both Leeds and Birmingham, but no actual deal occurred despite the interest. It seems that he will be remembered as the last of 42 Liverpool youth alumni to receive a senior debut from Klopp.

The son of a Premier League legend gets a hat-trick as Liverpool defeats Arsenal 7–0 in a convincing U18 victory.

Liverpool’s under-18 team defeated Arsenal 7-1 to get to the FA Youth Cup’s fifth round.

Liverpool Under-18s defeated Arsenal 7-1 behind a hat-trick from Lewis Koumas, advancing them to the FA Youth Cup fifth round.

Son of former Premier League player Jason Koumas, the 18-year-old attacker has spent most of his season playing for the Under-21 team. However, he was the star of the show as he once more joined Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s team for the prestigious cup match.

After Ethan Nwaneri momentarily tied the score, he restored Liverpool’s lead with a deflected strike to open the scoring early on. The goal scorer then took on a supporting role, assisting Trent Kone-Doherty in the Reds’ third goal.

After his first shot was stopped, Koumas was involved once more in his team’s fourth goal, and Kone-Doherty was there to convert the rebound for his brace. Meanwhile, Jayden Danns, a prolific scorer, scored from 40 yards out after a defensive blunder.

After that, Danns scored twice more with a fantastic free kick into the top corner, and Koumas completed his hat-trick in the closing minutes to complete an overwhelming 7-1 victory that set up a fifth-round matchup with either Fulham or Swansea City.

Danns headed down a cross from Kone-Doherty on the left, and Koumas finished it off to score Liverpool’s first goal of the game in the nick of time.

Nwaneri forced Kornel Misciur to lower himself to make a save as Arsenal retaliated. However, the Gunners’ subsequent attack resulted in an equaliser thanks to a Reds mistake.

Nwaneri twisted past Misciur and into the lower corner after robbing Ben Trueman on the edge of his own box.

Arsenal really ought to have grabbed the lead, but they were inefficient in front of goal. With the goal gaping, Reds captain Josh Davidson headed the Gunners striker’s header off the line after Misciur had denied Chido Martin-Obi from close range.

The brilliant Trey Nyoni pressed high to win the ball from Nwaneri, then found Koumas, who found the bottom corner with a deflected drive from the edge of the box. Liverpool would soon make the forward regret such a wasted opportunity.

Unlike the visitors, the Reds were clinical in front of goal, and when Koumas chested the ball down to the winger, Kone-Doherty made no mistakes. He got behind the defence by bursting down the left and easily beating the custodian at the near post to give Liverpool a resounding lead at halftime.

After the break, Bridge-Wilkinson’s team smelled blood and rapidly increased their lead. With one eye on a possible hat-trick, Nyoni played in Koumas down the left as the forward cut inside and dribbled past multiple defenders.

He was unable to get past goalie Noah Cooper, though. Regretfully for Arsenal, Kone-Doherty was the first to respond and calmly put home the rebound.

Liverpool’s fifth goal of the evening came from them, and although the Gunners were last year’s FA Youth Cup finalists, they were in disarray at this stage.

Cooper was halted outside of his area, allowing Danns to get possession. Danns made no mistake, side-footing the ball into the open net from 40 yards out.

Despite the distance, Danns’ second goal was ridiculously simple compared to his first. Following the captain Josh Davidson’s foul on the edge of the box, the attacker took the ball and bent an incredible 25-yard free kick into the upper corner.

The attacker still had time to miss out on a hat-trick late in the game when he skillfully played a one-two with Kieran Morrison, only for Cooper to drop back and tip his strike behind. Where Koumas was denied, however, he was not, as his teammate scored the final goal of the game to complete the scoring and claim his hat-trick by slipping past the advancing custodian.

Danns scored last weekend during his full debut for the Under-21s, bringing his tally of competitive goals for Liverpool’s Academy this season to 19. Additionally, the 17-year-old’s prolific play in the second half of the season is showing no signs of slowing down after he scored a brace against Fleetwood Town in the previous round of the FA Youth Cup.

Even though Koumas has been the focal point of attention for the Liverpool Under-18s this season, the victory on Saturday night belonged to him. More senior opportunities are undoubtedly ahead after being selected for Jurgen Klopp’s first team throughout the preseason and for a Europa League trip to Union SG.

Liverpool (4-2-3-1) starting lineup: Morrison, Danns, Kone-Doherty, Koumas; Miscuir; Davidson, Pinnington, Lucky, Nallo; Trueman (Laffey), Nyoni.

Replacements: Furnell-Gill, Pennington, Morana, Pitt, Gyimah, and Figueroa.

Jurgen Klopp will be keeping a close eye on 5 young players during preseason. Many Liverpool fans will be hoping to get their first glimpse of the impact the club’s new signings can make as preseason for the club begins in earnest.

Jurgen Klopp will be interested in seeing what Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai can bring to the table this season, but he will also be eager to keep an eye on a number of players who do not have a high price tag attached to them.

If the Reds’ season goes according to plan, they will play enough games in all competitions to significantly tax the biggest teams, even with new additions.

The club’s young players may be able to help in this situation by playing in domestic cup competitions and the Europa League to lighten the load of their more experienced teammates.

Here, we highlight five academy standouts who stand the best chance of using the preseason to position themselves for such a position this season.

    Ben Doak

Jurgen Klopp will be keeping a close eye on 5 young players during preseason. Doak, who was a key member of the first-team squad at the age of just 17 last season, will look to improve once more this time around in order to secure more senior appearances.

The teen quickly won fans over during his five appearances in 2022–2023 thanks to his direct running style, close control, and fearlessness.

Perhaps because Szoboszlai has experience playing on the wing, there is now more competition for spots in the attack as a result of this information.

Doak, however, has high expectations from Liverpool, and should he develop as anticipated, he will undoubtedly be competing for more playing time regardless.

    Jarell Quansah
Jurgen Klopp will be keeping a close eye on 5 young players during preseason.

The ease with which Quansah adapted to that task last season bodes incredibly well for his future because League One is an unforgiving environment for any 20-year-old centre-back to try and learn their trade.

During a half-season stint with Bristol Rovers last season, the defender from Warrington quickly became a fan favorite and now returns to Merseyside with a wealth of new knowledge.

Naturally, not everything went well; Gas manager Joey Barton noted the youngster’s career-defining moment as receiving a last-second red card against Portsmouth.

But by the time Quansah’s loan period was over, his manager had no doubt that he would apply what he had learned and succeed all the way to the top.

    Bobby Clark

Jurgen Klopp will be keeping a close eye on 5 young players during preseason.
During the last season’s break for the World Cup, Clark provided the ideal illustration of how to use any brief time with the senior team to catch the manager’s attention.

The former Newcastle academy midfielder participated as the Reds competed in the Dubai Super Cup to get ready for the new season.

And in the win over AC Milan, he contributed a particularly eye-catching assist that was worthy of mention in Klopp’s post-game press conferences.

In order to build on the two first-team appearances he earned in 2022–23, Clark will aim to repeat the same performance in the upcoming friendlies.

    Marcelo Pitaluga

Jurgen Klopp will be keeping a close eye on 5 young players during preseason.
Liverpool might not need to search the market for a replacement homegrown goalkeeper if Caoimhin Kelleher eventually leaves Anfield this summer.

For the 2024–25 season, Pitaluga, who joined the Reds from Fluminense in 2020, will be considered when determining eligibility.

Of course, the most crucial factor is whether or not the Brazilian is prepared after an injury severely limited his opportunity to experience first-team football while on loan at Macclesfield last season.

However, he will be eager to do everything in his power in the upcoming weeks to convince Klopp that he ought to be the next cab off the rank in the event that Kelleher leaves.

    Lewis Koumas

Jurgen Klopp will be keeping a close eye on 5 young players during preseason.
Koumas’ success scoring goals at the U18 level last season has earned him some early participation in the senior team’s preseason this year.

In the coming weeks, the talented teen, who in January signed his first professional contract, will look to demonstrate that he can advance to first-team standards.

Although Koumas’ small stature may work against him in terms of playing a significant role next season, his versatility on the frontline won’t hurt his chances.

And even though he isn’t quite ready to move to the senior side just yet, this summer will be a crucial learning experience.
