Manchester City star and Chelsea target Aymeric Laporte have ‘concrete chances’ of securing his exit from the Etihad Stadium

CHELSEA are on the hunt for defensive reinforcements this summer as Mauricio Pochettino look to further improve a side which struggled to keep their sheets clean last season.

And that has led to constant speculation in the media that Chelsea are monitoring a number of possible defenders until the end of the transfer window in a bid to fix a very big problem in the squad.

Shocking reports surfaced in the media over the weekend that Chelsea have contacted Man City over a possible deal for the impressive Laporte, who is one of the best defenders in world football.

Now journalist Rudy Galetti has claimed Laporte has a very good chance of sealing a Man City exit – although he believes Barcelona and Bayern Munich are leading the race for the star.

Galetti told GIVEMESPORT: “There are concrete chances that Laporte will leave Manchester City this summer.”
“Bayern are interested in him but their priority is to sign Kim Min-jae in early July and Barcelona are also on their way.”

“The future of the Spanish centre-back, whose contract expires in 2025, has not yet been decided.”

It would be a huge shock if Laporte left the club despite being an integral part of the Man City squad – Pep Guardiole won’t want him to leave.

However, if the Spanish manager feels he cannot get the best out of Laporte in the future, a deal could be at stake.

It has come to light that similar efforts are being made to bind down Levi Colwill, just one day after agreeing to sell an academy graduate for the highest transfer fee ever paid for a player coming through Cobham.

Brighton, who were impressed by the 20-year-old’s performances under Roberto De Zerbi last season, have already made two sizable offers to sign him. The Seagulls’ offers, at £40 million, would be higher than what Chelsea was offered for Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori.

These are currently the largest incoming prices for Cobham’s biggest exits, but Mason Mount is expected to bring in £55 million for his move to Manchester United, with the possibility that that sum could still increase to £60 million with add-ons reached.

It is evidence of both the high caliber of players being developed and the mistakes that were made along the way. Chelsea acquired Kalidou Koulibaly for £35 million on a four-year deal the same summer that Mount was sold, a development that seemed unthinkable even a year earlier.

Having sold Marc Guehi to Crystal Palace before making a first-team appearance for the club and Tomori for £25 million in 2021, it raises concerns over which players are kept and why.
However, an offer from the Saudi Pro League has helped them out of a hole with that one.

Despite the fact that more than £300 million worth of attackers have been signed, Abraham demanded a higher fee when he joined Roma and no player has yet to match the 15 league goals he scored in 2019–20. Mount’s 11 last season is the closest they have gotten to matching Abraham’s totals after four years.

The same error needs to be steadfastly avoided now that Colwill is regarded as one of the best players to come through the academy and his loan spell at Huddersfield as a teenager was comparable to Reece James’ at Wigan. Losing Colwill is out of the question after selling Guehi and Tomori and returning to Thiago Silva as a viable option.

For Mauricio Pochettino’s inaugural season, the club wants to make him a crucial piece of the puzzle. There is no immediate need to act because he still has two years left on his initial contract and has the option of exercising an additional club option to extend it for another season.

Brighton is one of many teams interested in Colwill, but there is still a desire to show their allegiance to him before the preseason. He has reportedly been given a new, long-term contract by the club, according to the Evening Standard, but he won’t sign anything until he meets with Pochettino after his return from the Under-21 European Championships with England.

Colwill is already being discussed, in contrast to Mount, who entered the final two years of his contract without much progress toward improved and agreed-upon terms. It wasn’t until after last summer that Mount became a serious problem, at which point time was of the essence.

According to Transfermarkt, the player’s value has increased significantly since he joined Huddersfield as a 19-year-old in 2022 for about £4million. However, the club’s decision to reject early bids from clubs across Europe shows where they stand as the summer transfer window approaches.

It is believed that losing Mount in these conditions was the biggest oversight made by the ownership to date. Perhaps a sign of how seriously this situation is being taken is that steps are being taken to prevent the same thing from occurring with a player who is thought to be even more promising than the 24-year-old.

Chelsea has learned from it, but it’s still too soon to be certain of the future until Colwill has extended his stay.
