Chelsea news as Mauricio Pochettino attempts to balance defensive options and injuries while aware of a potential departure for Thiago Silva.

Chelsea’s problems this season have been evident with the team ranking second in the league for defensive performance.
They only have seven goals in seven games, including three games without a goal, which is clearly below average, but they are unbeatable defensively.

Only Everton has failed to score more goals than Chelsea this season, and just two teams have been less productive at home, highlighting their weaknesses.
Just half of the Blues’ games at Stamford Bridge this season have seen them score.

The Blues are very strong on defense, which is the metric that is said to win championships.
They have only given up six goals in seven games, three of them on the road against West Ham. Only Manchester City, who currently leads the league, has conceded fewer goals so far.

It hasn’t been a significant overperformance either; according to the xGA, Chelsea has conceded nearly two fewer goals than the underlying statistics would indicate, but there are eight other teams in the league that have performed equally well or better at this point.
    to put it simply.

When they lost to both Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa due to errors, it didn’t always appear that way, but in both contests, the defense would have received less criticism if the forwards had done their jobs in front of goal.
At this point, no team has underperformed their expected strikes more than Chelsea, with the exception of Everton’s system-breaking -8.40 xG differential.

It makes a case for how better results will come as soon as the finishing gets better.
This is the very nature of football after all—simple to understand, harder to actually do.

The fact that the defense is currently the most injury-stricken and possibly the furthest from full fitness within this is a plus for Pochettino. Thiago Silva is 39 and leaves others to cover for his immobility despite what he brings to the team, Reece James is the starting right-back but has only played 70 minutes this season, Axel Disasi is entering his second month in the Premier League, and Levi Colwill is playing left-back but is out of position.

It’s quite an accomplishment to have the defensive consistency that has been discovered—three clean sheets in the last four games across all competitions—with a backline that may not contain all four members of the ideal lineup. Although it’s unclear how Wesley Fofana, Colwill, Silva, Disasi, and Benoit Badiashile will work together after this season, not to mention Trevoh Chalobah, there are many possibilities.

But Pochettino has opted to maintain a rigid hiring procedure.
This isn’t the defense that Chelsea supporters would have chosen in the preseason, whether it’s because of injuries, getting his feet under the table, or largely trusting a growing body of impressive work – it could be a mix of all of them.

With healthy full-backs and the Silva-Colwill partnership forming long before Disasi arrived, the manager himself was much more traditional in America.
Badiashile may be the missing piece that will allow all of this to proceed.

From January 12 on, Chelsea won just four games in the second half of the season, and Badiashile played in every one of them.
Alongside Silva frequently, the 22-year-old only participated in two of Chelsea’s defeats in the previous season; without him, the team’s record was played 10, won 0 games, 2 drew games, and 8 defeats.

Even in the world of Chelsea finishing 12th, how strongly that correlates to improvement is astounding.

With Badiashile on the team, four clean sheets were recorded in 11 games, as opposed to just one without him.
His aerial presence and left-footed option to the defense stood out right away.

It is unclear how he will fit in when he returns from injury in the upcoming weeks, but the work he has done so far cannot be overlooked.
He will try to work with Silva as often as he can to learn from him, which will help. Badiashile glowed like a child when asked who the club’s oldest player was.

He said, “I must get on his nerves a little because I ask him an enormous amount of questions.
It’s because, as Axel [Disasi] said, he’s exceptionally intelligent and mature for his age.
Working with someone of his caliber is such an honor; he benefits everyone around him and helps us achieve our full potential.

Due to the lack of a natural left-footer that Pochettino is willing to pick there, Silva is currently playing on the left side.
When he returns, Badiashile will be vying with Silva and Colwill for the starting spot there, while the right side is crowded with Disasi, Fofana, and the possibility of using Chalobah or Silva there as well.

Although there are numerous moving parts, Pochettino’s current decisions mean that little change is likely to occur.
But over time, Badiashile will be eager to assert himself because he has earned the chance.

    Silva responds to fan reactions

Thiago Silva has responded to a Chelsea fan who suggested dropping him from the squad following the 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

The Brazil international was insane in the run up to Anthony Elanga’s goal and that was apparently enough for a Blues supporter who admitted he thought the veteran defender was holding Chelsea back.

It’s fair to say, though, that Silva didn’t take that comment very well when he replied on Instagram with a subtle nod to Mauricio Pochettino.

    Chilwell makes goals claim

Ben Chilwell has revealed what Chelsea need to do better if they are to improve following their 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues looked brilliant up front with 21 shots on target, but only two of those forced a save from Matt Turner, with Chilwell highlighting the obvious problem.

“We are going in the right direction,” he said.
“We controlled possession in every game and in most games we played.

We have to take risks, be more reckless and keep our composure to get back into the game.
This is the last part, trying our luck.”

    Mudryk slammed

Mykhailo Mudryk has come under fire again following Chelsea’s surprise defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The Ukraine international came on as a second-half substitute and struggled to make an impact, almost helping Nottingham Forest score instead.
He’s yet to score for the Blues, providing only two assists.

And of the 19 games he has played, Chelsea have won just twice, with former Premier League striker Gabby Agbonlahor calling his performance against Forest “totally pointless”

'Clearly': Journalist hints Mauricio Pochettino isn't a big fan of £29m Chelsea player anyway
Graeme Bailey has hinted that Mauricio Pochettino is actually not a big fan of Noni Madueke at Chelsea.

The trusted and respected journalist spoke out on the Talking Transfers podcast.

    What is the problem?

Well, actually it was Graham Potter, not the Argentine, who signed the England Under-21 international from PSV Eindhoven in January.

Pochettino was also in charge of Tottenham when Madueke left Spurs for the Netherlands in 2018. The South American has given the 21-year-old just 15 minutes of Premier League action so far this season and has now signed very similar Cole Palmer from Manchester City for £45m. giving the £29m player more competition.
    Go with it.

Now Bailey has hinted that Pochettino’s transfer to Palmer means Madueke is not in his good books.

The reporter said: “I think they might be ready (in the transfer window). Palmer emerged after Olise said no. Bradley Barcola has turned his back on interests, he seems to be going to PSG.

'Clearly': Journalist hints Mauricio Pochettino isn't a big fan of £29m Chelsea player anyway
“They say they are doing nothing. Conor Gallagher, it doesn’t look like he’s leaving right now. Chelsea want Gallagher to stay and sign a new contract. However, if someone comes along and offers £50million, they are ready to let it go.

“I think it depends on who Pochettino considers a player. Obviously, I don’t think he’s a big fan of Madueke.”

Noni Madueke could face Chelsea move in January

The 2023/24 season hasn’t started well for Madueke despite scoring against AFC Wimbledon on Wednesday.

The Chelsea No.11’s situation currently looks quite grim under Pochettino. If Palmer’s arrival means he has even less playing time, he could have a big decision to make in January.

Madueke is far too talented to sit on the bench and if Pochettino really doesn’t like him, he might have to go for an exit while his value is still high. I hope the winger born in London can familiarize himself with the good books of the 51 -year -old man and become an important player at Stamford Bridge.

Football in Chelsea’s 2023–24 preseason has two games completed. London examines the possible defensive alignment for the Blues when they play Liverpool next month.

When the defender started against Brighton in Philadelphia yesterday, fans finally got the chance to see Levi Colwill in action for Chelsea.

Against the Seagulls, the 20-year-old center back started in defense alongside Thiago Silva, who is nearly twice his age. The hype surrounding the young Chelsea defender was fueled by Colwill, who stood out as looking particularly accomplished in the center of defense.

Malo Gusto played right fullback while Ben Chilwell played left fullback. Reece James recently made his way to the United States on his own. However, James is currently in training with his Chelsea teammates and might participate in Thursday’s match against Newcastle United.

But the back-four that Mauricio Pochettino started with against Brighton in Philadelphia might be comparable to what we see when Chelsea plays Liverpool in their opening Premier League game of the 2023–24 season next month.
    So, let’s talk football.

London examines what Chelsea’s back line might look like when the Reds visit Stamford Bridge.

    Possible Chelsea defense against Liverpool.

We may have seen something resembling the lineup Pochettino intends to use against Liverpool by substituting James for Gusto. In the two games he has played so far, Gusto has shown tremendous promise, especially against Brighton, where he held his own against the incredibly gifted Kaoru Mitoma.

Gusto, however, has to contend with James, one of the best right backs in all of football, which is unfortunate for him. Pochettino’s team will be significantly strengthened in the back-four if Chelsea can keep James healthy for the upcoming season.

James and Chilwell, Chelsea’s full-backs, will be able to find themselves in much more dangerous attacking situations with Colwill now in defense. Colwill has a ridiculous passing range. It adds a new defensive dimension for the team.

When the child picks up the ball, he consistently scans the wide areas for players. Nine times out of ten, he has the aptitude and vision to locate these players. Against Brighton on Sunday morning, we witnessed such brilliance.

Football in Chelsea's 2023–24 preseason has two games completed. London examines the possible defensive alignment for the Blues when they play
Currently, Lewis Hall, Marc Cucurella, and Ian Maatsen are all viable options for the Blues to choose from on the left side of the defense. Recent games featured Hall in his preferred position in central midfield, which may provide an indication of what Pochettino has in store for the 18-year-old going forward.

The Cobham graduate’s abilities at left-back are, however, well known to us.
However, the Blues have absurd depth at left-back thanks to Maatsen and Cucurella, who have both been outstanding in Chelsea’s two preseason games.

It does not appear as good in center-back. As a football player, Wesley Fofana has torn his anterior cruciate ligament. A significant portion of the upcoming season will now be lost by the France international due to the serious injury, London announced last week.

Benoît Badiashile, who experienced a hamstring issue toward the end of the previous season, is still recovering in the meantime. The Frenchman is currently back at Cobham as he speeds up his recovery process, but he hopes to rejoin the squad for the start of the season.

Colwill, Silva, and Trevoh Chalobah are the only senior center backs left for Chelsea. But once Badiashile is healthy again, Pochettino’s situation will be much more appealing.

Thiago Silva set for surprise new Chelsea role as unexpected transfer 'confirmed'
Chelsea news: Cesar Azpilicueta is set to leave the club this summer, leaving a huge void for Thiago Silva and Reece James that the Blues must now fill without a captain.

Mauricio Pochettino faces the biggest challenge as Chelsea manager even before becoming head coach. With his official start date not earlier than July 1, things could be very different when he arrives at Cobham.

He is likely to be without a group of at least seven first-team players, as well as Denis Zakaria and Joao Felix, whose loans have not been renewed.

Even for a big team of 32 players, that’s quite a difference. Now, in the final week before the actual preparations for the pre-season tour of America begin, Pochettino must prepare for a reality many have not anticipated.

After 11 years at the club, Cesar Azpilicueta will leave Chelsea and step down as captain.

The 33-year-old replaced John Terry as permanent captain after leaving Stamford Bridge in 2017. Since then he has guided the team to wins in the Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup, Super Cup UEFA and the Club World Cup. He also captained three FA Cup final defeats and one League Cup final defeat.

After a glorious spell at the club, he is now preparing to move to new pastures, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The transfer guru says Azpilicueta has agreed personal terms with Inter Milan and could have his contract terminated by Chelsea to ensure the deal goes through.

Thiago Silva set for surprise new Chelsea role as unexpected transfer 'confirmed'
Out of respect for Azpilicueta, who made his 500th blue appearance for Chelsea earlier this season, the Blues would terminate his contract. After being linked with a move to Barcelona for much of last summer, he has signed a late two-year extension.

With injuries and extra competition in the squad, he has played just 1,500 minutes of league football, the least since he joined over 500 minutes.

Compared to the 2019/20 season, his playing time has more than halved. It is proof that he has struggled to work as a full-back or a conventional full-back in recent seasons, although he has continued to remain an important option as a full-back in a back three .

It now looks like he will move on before the Pochettino era really begins, leaving plenty for the new manager and players to replace.
Azpilicueta is expected to leave the club due to a lack of experience and notable managers.

Thiago Silva is said to be the only first-team player over 30, while only four players are said to be over 25. Potential newcomers aside, Silva is now miles ahead of the closest player in age. Now he may also have to take on a new role in the team.

As vice-captain following Jorginho’s departure in January, the Brazilian has steadily taken over the armband since he arrived from Paris Saint-Germain in 2020 and will now be a prime candidate to take on the full-time job.

Apart from Reece James, Ben Chilwell and possibly Raheem Sterling, there is a great lack of choices in this regard. While there are emerging leaders within Enzo Fernandez who fit this picture, there is much to replace in terms of leadership and experience.

For Silva, who himself has a one-year rolling contract, that would be nothing new after spending his entire career as leader and captain, but it would also be an interim solution for the 38-year-old who is unable to play forever.

after you. Kepa Arrizabalaga has also captained matches this season with other options off the pitch, but his long-term future is uncertain. James is a natural fit, but he’s a shy character and could possibly serve as Silva’s replacement for another season.

However, after appointing Hugo Lloris as his captain at Tottenham Hotspur shortly after arriving, Pochettino will now need to quickly assess his squad and make a similar choice at Chelsea.
