Current rumours and news surrounding transfers involving Liverpool, as the Reds could have a number of possibilities besides Martin Zubimendi if they choose to seek elsewhere.

It appears like Liverpool’s strategy for this transfer window has been to focus primarily on individuals who will make an instant effect on the starting lineup. The Reds under the ownership of Fenway Sports Group have never signed players only for financial gain or to add depth to the team.

Liverpool declared Martin Zubimendi their top midfield target this summer. The Real Sociedad player was thought to be amenable to a transfer to Anfield by the Reds, but Zubimendi decided to stay with the La Liga team.

The question of whether Liverpool will look for a substitute is still up in the air. The Reds have occasionally had to alter their transfer plans while operating under FSG ownership if a deal to sign their top target doesn’t go through.

Regarding Zubimendi, the outstanding midfielder for Sociedad appears to be the sole player Liverpool sought to sign this transfer window to play at number six. Although the Reds have until August 30 to finish their summer transfer business, it is unclear if that position will change.

There appear to be options available if Liverpool decides they need to buy a new defensive midfield player other than Zubimendi. There are a few guys on FBref’s list with abilities comparable to Zubimendi’s, but one player’s name sticks out.

The list mentions Ederson, an Atlanta star, as having a profile comparable to Zubimendi’s. The Brazilian midfielder has been linked to the Reds this summer, but he is not currently believed to be a target.

Aurelien Tchouameni, a star player for Real Madrid, is another player included. In 2022, Liverpool made an attempt to sign the midfield player; nevertheless, he decided to move to the Santiago Bernabeu in exchange for a possible £85 million transfer.

Players that are comparable to Zubimendi in terms of skill have also been listed by Macro Football. Azor Matusiwa, a great player at Stade Rennais, is one player named on both the list and FBref.

The Ligue 1 club signed Matusiwa in January for an estimated €20 million (£17 million). Matusiwa and Zubimendi, who is ranked second on the list behind Lazio player Danilo Cataldi, are 97.9 percent identical according to the report. Although it seems doubtful that any of these players will sign as a replacement for Zubimendi—especially in light of the lack of recent rumours of a transfer—it does indicate that there are players out there who Liverpool may consider if they decide to seek elsewhere.
