Transfers to Liverpool: An ambitious double-swoop suddenly seems appealing
Share
Liverpool suddenly looks to have made two transfers that are ideal after changes in the management competition. In2024, the Reds will take significant action.
Liverpool knows they should make at least one sensible signing this summer: a center-back. Joel Matip, whose contract expires at the end of the season, is the main cause of that. He just suffered a catastrophic, long-term knee injury.
But there was another crucial cause – a shift in formation. That seems to be aimed at Liverpool, particularly considering that Xabi Alonso and Rúben Amorim were the two managers they were most interested in.
Given that both have had success with 3-4-3 systems, Liverpool is presumably going after managers who stick with three centre backs. Naturally, the Reds are a team created for two.
When you combine that with the circumstances surrounding Matip, it makes sense that Liverpool would want a new centre back this summer. For added incentive, consider the fact that Virgil van Dijk will be retiring shortly after turning 33 in June.
Thus, anticipate some action on that front. And given the way things are going, it might be wise to commit to a bold double-swoop.
OUSMANE DIOMANDE AND GONCALO INACIO
Sporting CP has centre backs that Liverpool could want to consider if they do want one. After all, it is more and more likely that Amorim will take over as manager in the near future.
More than that, though, they already seem to appreciate the way two Sporting centre backs look. Not the former Red Sebastian Coates, no, but his usual partners.
Ousmane Diomande and Goncalo Inacio have been connected to Liverpool for several months. They supposedly have connections to the defender dating back even farther, and they had been scouting Inacio earlier this year.
It was reported at the same time that Liverpool was interested in Diomande, a 20-year-old. It almost seems as though they knew going into January that Sporting players were worth a look.
We think highly of Diomande here, and he might be the player Liverpool chooses to sign if they decide to sign any player.
However, there are a lot of grounds for signing a centre back, making a double take increasingly appealing. Actually, it may make sense if Amorim decides to move to Anfield.
There is a need to increase the number of defenders in that position, two very talented young players, and a manager that is well-versed in them. Yes, it would require a significant financial commitment, but Liverpool might benefit from it just as much this summer.

Arsenal and Liverpool are interested: Dortmund will give up their prolific striker.
Donyell Malen can yet be forced out of the team by Jadon Sancho’s outstanding performances for Borussia Dortmund.
A possible trade agreement that would keep the former Manchester United player in Germany might employ the Englishman’s excellent teammate as a makeweight.
Yet, there will be no shortage of suitors for the 25-year-old right-sided striker, according to Edin Terzic’s team.
“Jadon Sancho continues to improve. He most recently scored in matches against Eindhoven and Bremen. The team examined historical information from the archives in order to compare Sancho’s initial Dortmund stats. Then, his workout regimen will be modified,” Christian Falk said in his special Fact Files column.
Sebastian Kehl, the sports director, is overjoyed with Sancho. He wants to speak with Manchester United in May because of this. Another loan is the objective.
“However, a backup plan exists as well: Donyell Malen is presently performing at his highest level since joining Dortmund. There is interest in him from Manchester United. Dortmund would discard him. A trade exchange would be possible.
“Good news for Dortmund: The Dutchman is also attracting interest from Arsenal FC and Liverpool FC.”
Malen has been having an incredible season in the German top division, contributing eight goals in his last seven league appearances.
Is Sancho going back to Manchester United?
Until Sancho issues a very public apology to Erik ten Hag, it appears quite doubtful that he will be able to resume his career at Old Trafford at this point.
However, considering how a return to Germany has rekindled a waning career, the 23-year-old might be happy enough to stay put.
At this point, the only thing that could persuade Sancho to believe differently would be a managerial change in Manchester
