Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future at Liverpool is again under discussion, as the right-back has made it clear what he needs to extend his stay at the club.
While Liverpool has had a strong start to the season, unresolved contract issues loom large. As September transitions into October, three significant contract situations remain unsettled. However, Alexander-Arnold has already communicated to Arne Slot what will be necessary for him to remain at Anfield.
It’s somewhat unfortunate, yet not surprising, that those with expiring contracts have been key contributors to the team’s early success under Slot. Mohamed Salah has been prolific, Virgil van Dijk has been formidable, but Alexander-Arnold has perhaps stood out the most.
In the recent match against Bournemouth, he finally registered a league goal involvement after having a strike against Manchester United disallowed. However, his single assist does not capture the full extent of his contributions, as he has been instrumental at times this season.
Recently, Alexander-Arnold shared some insight, stating his commitment to Liverpool for the current season. He emphasized that negotiations for a new deal would remain private, noting that he has signed multiple extensions before without media attention.
That said, he was candid about his aspirations. He indicated that trophies would be the primary consideration in his decision regarding his future. Essentially, it is up to Slot to demonstrate his ability to lead Liverpool to silverware—ideally more than Jurgen Klopp achieved.
Moreover, Alexander-Arnold mentioned he has discussed his expectations with Slot. He has asked his coach to be “harsh,” encouraging him to highlight every mistake to help push him to new levels.
“We talked about targets and aims and I said to [Slot] that I want to be the defender that no one wants to come up against in Europe,” Alexander-Arnold stated. “We agreed that he will be harsh on me, and every time anyone gets past me, he will call it out in meetings and say this can’t happen.”
He added that they review every game together to pinpoint areas for improvement, citing that from one recent match, they identified about 20 clips of potential enhancements. “It’s really refreshing to have a manager who will help and guide and teach me how to be better as a player and I’m someone who wants to learn and strive to be the best ever.”
It appears Slot and Alexander-Arnold have established a positive rapport. However, high standards must be maintained if Liverpool hopes to avoid the potential crisis of losing its star player and vice-captain for free this summer, with foreign clubs soon able to negotiate.
Given the urgency, Slot has limited time to show that Alexander-Arnold can achieve his goals at Liverpool. While this task is challenging, the coach has been alerted to what is required.
According to Liverpool.com, securing a new deal for Alexander-Arnold isn’t solely in Slot’s hands. Financial considerations might not be the top priority, but the club must still present an attractive offer.
Ultimately, it seems that Alexander-Arnold will only engage in discussions if he believes Liverpool is the best environment for him to win more trophies and continue his development. In that regard, the responsibility lies with Slot to fulfill his role in securing the contract extension that fans desire.
