The guy that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool club may have ready to step into the “Steven Gerrard role” is not Trent Alexander-Arnold. The right back, who was raised in Liverpool, has long been expected to go from defence to midfield after playing as a No. 6 in the academy for Klopp’s No. 2 Pep Lijnders.

Although Alexander-Arnold captained Lijnders’ under-16 team, he was restructured as a right-back in order to gain entry into the first team. The 25-year-old West Derby native, who is currently the seniors’ vice captain, is a vital member of Klopp’s team and a superb passer.

Because of his exceptional ball handling skills, there have long been rumours that he could play midfield for Liverpool. Since April of last year, he has played a hybrid role in which he moves into centre areas when in possession of the ball. In 1999, Gerrard began his career as a right-back before becoming into a great box-to-box midfield player.

Additionally, Klopp has been informed that he has another player in his lineup who is prepared to start playing midfield full-time, following in the footsteps of the legendary former captain Conor Bradley. The Northern Irishman made his Premier League debut on Sunday in a 4-0 thumping of Bournemouth, where he had chances to score and ended up with an assist.

Bradley has performed well in his recent run of first-team appearances this month due to Alexander-Arnold’s injury. He started games against Fulham and Bournemouth and made a cameo as a substitute against Arsenal. The 20-year-old, a lifelong fan of Liverpool, joined the team in 2019.

Having previously earned 13 matches for Northern Ireland, he had an outstanding season last season while on loan at League One’s Bolton Wanderers, contributing seven goals and six assists in 53 games as a right wing-back. However, Joe McAree, a legend in the Irish League and his previous coach at Dungannon United Youth, contends that his future lies in the middle of the pitch.

“The Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, and all of his coaches know a lot more than me, but I think they will see an even better player the first chance Conor gets to play the Steven Gerrard midfield role,” he said to the Belfast Telegraph. I’m not going to change my views about that.

The manager of Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp, has been informed that he has an additional Steven Gerrard in his team.

“It’s due to his passing talent and capacity to move from box to box. He sees a pass that kills. He possesses an exceptional engine in addition to the fundamental skill required by Liverpool Football Club, which is the ability to control and pass the football. He can go a long way in the game and is an amazing player.

“He was a pleasure to work with and a different quality of player when we placed him in the heart of midfield. In addition to his skill set, Conor exudes confidence and maintains a polished appearance. He’s a typical country lad who went to Liverpool and excelled there, but he hasn’t changed at all.”

And that came when former Republic of Ireland striker Tony Cascarino made comparisons between Gerrard and Bradley, saying: “I have to mention Conor Bradley at full-back, he runs like Steven Gerrard. I know people get annoyed when you compare someone to Gerrard.”

“However, after glancing at him, I assumed he was a midfield player who would play there for Liverpool. He is a wonderful fit for Klopp’s style of midfield play because of his unwavering energy and ability to cover every blade of grass.”

Given the level of competition at Liverpool, it’s questionable if Bradley will receive the opportunity to play in midfield. He currently sits behind Alexander-Arnold as the starting right-back, a position that guarantees more playing time.

Furthermore, Bradley might be the ideal replacement for the Reds if Alexander-Arnold sticks to his long-term hybrid role. If it turns out to be true, he could end up saving Klopp a tonne of cash. And the Liverpool manager won’t be whining if he turns into a box-to-box midfielder with even half the quality of Gerrard.
