Troy Deeney claims Dominik Szoboszlai produced one of the best moments he’s ever witnessed in Liverpool’s victory over Brentford

Liverpool achieved one of their most significant victories of the season on Saturday, securing a thrilling 2-0 win against Brentford.
Darwin Nunez’s record-breaking double in stoppage time was enough to seal the win for Arne Slot’s side in west London, after a dominant performance where Liverpool registered nearly 40 shots on goal. One of the key players in the match was Dominik Szoboszlai, who struck the crossbar in the first half before being substituted for Harvey Elliott with ten minutes remaining. Slot praised the England youth international for his impactful contribution off the bench.
Despite Szoboszlai’s solid performance, Troy Deeney was particularly impressed by one of the midfielder’s shots, which left a lasting impression on the pundit.
Szoboszlai strike ‘one of the best’ Deeney has ever seen
Writing for BBC Sport, Deeney highlighted one of Szoboszlai’s efforts against Brentford as “one of the best” he has ever seen, likely referring to the Hungarian’s attempt that hit the woodwork around the 30-minute mark.
Deeney commented: “He was excellent against Brentford and was a growing influence throughout the game. He looks comfortable in Arne Slot’s side now. He hit the bar with one of the best strikes I have ever seen, and on another day he could have had five.”
With Liverpool target Antoine Semenyo also naming Szoboszlai as one of his toughest Premier League opponents, the Hungarian continues to earn praise from top professionals in the sport. Deeney’s remarks further highlight Szoboszlai’s exceptional long-range shooting ability, despite Liverpool fans having seen relatively little of this aspect of his game since his move from the Bundesliga 18 months ago.
Slot needs to release Szoboszlai’s shackles if he’s to thrive
Szoboszlai’s addition to Liverpool’s squad in 2023 has been intriguing, as the former Leipzig player has yet to fully capture the imagination of fans, despite a number of competent performances that have been somewhat underwhelming.
For Slot, unlocking Szoboszlai’s potential by allowing him more freedom in the attack could garner significant praise. The advanced midfielder has shown the ability to do extraordinary things when given the right system and platform to succeed.
Harvey Elliott himself has praised Szoboszlai as “world-class,” and FC Barcelona’s Dani Olmo is another major admirer of the Liverpool no. 8. Slot’s challenge will be to provide Szoboszlai with the opportunity to truly flourish within this system.
