Virgil van Dijk on the “huge transformation” Liverpool is now going through and why he isn’t worried about his future despite no contract being presented
Virgil van Dijk, the captain of Liverpool, has not yet accepted a contract offer from the team despite praising the “massive change” that would soon occur with Arne Slot’s appointment.
After the Reds defeated Wolves 2-0 thanks to goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Jarell Quansah, Jurgen Klopp said farewell to Anfield on Sunday with an emotional farewell speech.
Following the match, owners Fenway Sports Group, who were in attendance to bid their own farewells to a manager who won eight trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League, gave Klopp a guard of honour and a specially-commissioned plaque.
Later, a post-season celebration took place at the Titanic Hotel in the city. With Slot expected to succeed Klopp, and Michael Edwards and Julian Ward rejoining FSG as executive directors along with new sporting director Richard Hughes, a significant change is now expected at Liverpool.
Reds captain Van Dijk is getting closer to the last 12 months of his own contract, and although he acknowledged that no terms are currently being offered, he reaffirmed his laid-back attitude towards the matter.
Van Dijk declared, “My future is not important at this moment.” “All I can say at this point is that I was astonished to learn that if I had to say goodbye to Klopp, I doubt I would be able to hold back my tears.
“These fans are unique, and it will be especially poignant when they say farewell to you. I asked Joel Matip as well, “How did you manage to keep it dry, buddy?”
“I believe he did a really good job of just wanting to stand with us and move swiftly through the guard of honour. I have nothing further to say at this time. Nothing is on the table, and nothing has changed. Absolutely no modifications to my circumstances.”
“Massive change,” Van Dijk continued. In addition to the manager, several departments within the club are seeing a high staff turnover rate. At this point, we need to have faith in the club’s project and direction, and we’ll see how things shake out in the preseason.
“When things change and you’re in the unknown, it might be a little frightening at first, but all you can do is trust the team and we’ll find out how things turn out when we return and report for preseason.
“I do know that, in order to avoid problems later in the season, we must have a solid break following our tournament. I hope the new boss would investigate that as well.
“I can only see what’s in there and how we have been playing the entire season; I don’t want to compare our circumstances to those of other teams.
“We have a tonne of space for growth and development—not just as individuals but also as a team in some circumstances. It should be interesting, and I’m already looking forward to the upcoming season.”
“Hopefully, we can consistently be up there once more. That’s the primary concern. We need to stick together as a team and maintain our integrity. We need it, especially as we approach the upcoming season. You have to keep together even in bad circumstances. That’s fantastic that you’re not concerned because that isn’t the situation, but you still need to keep working on it.”
When asked whether he had discussed Slot and his work in the Eredivisie with any contacts back home, Van Dijk replied, “I saw a picture [of me playing against Slot], he came on and we won the game and I kept a clean sheet against him.” Yes, I have told others about him. I am always asking a lot of questions because I am quite curious.
“We shall see. The Premier League and Liverpool are undoubtedly different leagues, but we are here to support him, and I will be available to him for anything he needs. It all comes down to supporting one another and giving him the opportunity to demonstrate his abilities to the other guys who will enter.
“He presumably already knows, but everyone is aware of our high standards, which must be appropriately managed in order to extract the best performance possible from each and every one of our players. We begin by taking a well-deserved rest before we get back to work.
“First, I have the Euros, others have the Copa America, some have a little break, and then we are starting over.” Naturally, I’d want to congratulate City and my two close pals Kevin De Bruyne and Nathan Ake. Hopefully, we’ll be back there challenging once more and finishing the job on time the following year.
