Anthony Gordon’s transfer to Liverpool appears to be making sense.

Anthony Gordon, a winger for Newcastle United, is reportedly attracting interest from Liverpool, but is that really as unlikely as it seems?
Yards can be used to measure the separation between the two locations. However, there are relatively few players that have gone straight from Everton to Liverpool. Quite brief, in fact.
Most definitely in the Premier League era, when at the beginning of the new millennium both Nick Barmby and Abel Xavier moved from Goodison to Anfield. That’s all, though. And for such a transfer to be finished before then, you have to go all the way back to Dave Hickson in 1959.
Barmby and Xavier were both short-lived at Liverpool; the former made 58 games before moving on to Leeds United, while the latter only made 21 appearances in 11 months.
And as a result, there hasn’t been much hunger for such transactions, though it’s true that the current disparity in quality between the different Merseyside squads has diminished the desire for a cross-Stanley Park trade, at least partially.
Still, given the current situation, it would be exceedingly difficult, if not outright impossible, for a player to go straight from Everton to Liverpool. Most of the time, the hassle would not be worth it. especially for an indigenous talent.
Which leads us to Anthony Gordon, a winger for Newcastle United now, a former Blue, who the Reds may be interested in this summer.
Gordon’s unquestionable quality and Liverpool connections make it a no-brainer that the Liverpool recruitment staff, overseen by sports director Richard Hughes and new Fenway Sports Group head of football Michael Edwards, will be evaluating him. The 23-year-old will undoubtedly be known to new boss Arne Slot.
Naturally, Gordon has always been a supporter of Liverpool, having begun his youth career there before moving to Everton at the age of eleven after being cut loose by the Reds. Additionally, Liverpool will already be considering bringing in the next generation of their forward line given the uncertainty surrounding Luis Diaz’s long-term future and the fact that Mohamed Salah is now far into his thirties on the other wing.
That might not happen this summer, in part because Newcastle United would prefer not to part with one of their most valuable assets—who joined from Everton for a reported £45 million in January 2023—to a perceived rival, even though financial regulations might force them to cash in on one player soon. Furthermore, Gordon has acknowledged that he has benefited from leaving Merseyside and is now better able to focus on his game.
However, past performance indicates that, should Liverpool want to examine Gordon more closely, it shouldn’t be written off entirely in the long run.
Most notably, the diversion from Everton to Liverpool has already been taken twice. Another Reds fan, David Johnson, started his career at Everton, when as a 20-year-old in 1970, he scored the game-winning derby goal. After Bill Shankly’s effort to sign Johnson was unsuccessful, he played for Ipswich Town for four years before joining Liverpool, where he won numerous titles and European Cups.
Steve McMahon started his career at his boyhood club, Everton, in the following ten years, but when he decided to leave in 1983, he selected Aston Villa over Liverpool, in part because of the seeming difficulties involved in moving directly across Stanley Park. Rather, two years later, he moved to Anfield, where he established himself as a key member of the squad that won two FA Cups and three league crowns.
There was a considerable gap between playing for the two Merseyside clubs after both transfers. Furthermore, one former Everton winger believes that Gordon’s appearance for Liverpool makes sense, even though any move for him may ultimately depend on the player pushing for a move.
Speaking to Prime Slots UK, Pat Nevin states, “I don’t think Evertonians have forgiven him for what happened at the end of his career there yet!” Anthony is really unique; he frequently interrupts others and reminds me of Jack Grealish prior to his move from Aston Villa to Manchester City.
“I’m not surprised by this rumour (about Liverpool), and I don’t think it should be discounted either. He can defeat players thanks to his incredible skills. Wingers much too frequently advance the ball up the pitch before turning around to provide a simple pass and end the threat.
“You pay 100 million pounds for someone who can break lines, drag others across, and create; you don’t pay that much for a winger to halt and turn around. Because they are rare in today’s football, these players are the ones on whom the money is being spent.
What is the duration of Mo Salah’s stay at Liverpool, and is he still as effective as he was in the past? Although he is still outstanding, Liverpool must consider their options because he cannot play for much longer. I believe he is that good, so it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest.”
