Levi Colwill, who is being pursued by Liverpool, must make a significant choice regarding his future at Chelsea during this transfer window.
It’s understandable if Levi Colwill has concerns about his future with Chelsea.
The center-back, who Liverpool is interested in signing, will speak with manager Mauricio Pochettino about his responsibilities at Stamford Bridge. The 20-year-old acknowledged he must make a decision after aiding England in winning the Under-21 European Championships.
After the final, Colwill said, “I’ll talk to my family, talk to everyone I need to, and make a decision. “I have to play at the end of the day to hopefully get there (England senior team) and go to the next camp. ”.
While Colwill’s current contract, which expires in 2025, does have a clause that allows the club to extend it by an additional year if he participates in a predetermined number of games, Chelsea would prefer that he sign a new, long-term contract. But that doesn’t mean he’ll stay put; sources in London claim that a number of teams are keeping an eye on his situation, including Liverpool, who have reportedly made numerous inquiries about his availability.
Colwill obviously wants to know that his future at Stamford Bridge is secure and that he will get to play. The Athletic has reported how Chelsea’s unsuccessful pursuit of Josko Gvardiol and subsequent £33 million signing of Kalidou Koulibalby ultimately sent the perplexed 20-year-old the message that his future lay elsewhere.
He left on loan to Brighton and Hove Albion last season; the club now wants to sign him permanently. Chelsea later spent £105 million on Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile, two center backs. In spite of the fact that Koulibaly was replaced after just one season, primarily to make room for Colwill, the harm arguably could have been done at that point.
The newest academy graduate to pass through the Chelsea assembly line is Colwill. Reece James is the only homegrown talent to have found a long-term home, however, with Mason Mount now a player for Manchester United after feeling unwanted at Stamford Bridge.
For as good as the Londoners are at snatching up the best young talent, their hasty transfer model has seen them develop a reputation for repeatedly selling their own for profit, in favor of spending big on shiny new toys who haven’t emerged from within.
Selling Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Billy Gilmour, Fikayo Tomori, Marc Guehi, Tino Livramento, Tammy Abraham, Ola Aina, Tariq Lamptey, Jeremie Boga, Nathan Ake, and Nathaniel Chalobah has brought in about £220 million since the start of the 2017–18 season. In the meantime, they would also receive a compensation package when Liverpool signed Dominic Solanke at the end of his contract, worth between £3 million and £10 million.
All 13 players are either full international players or proven top-flight professionals in a significant European league. At Chelsea, some of them barely had a chance to prove themselves as established first team players, even though it wasn’t realistic to expect that of them all.
They have made 340 total Premier League appearances for the Londoners. However, 290 of them are credited to Mount, Loftus-Cheek, and Abraham, with the latter receiving only a few chances due to a two-window transfer ban prior to being sold to AS Roma. Billy Gilmour and Fikayo Tomori were the only other two to make more than ten appearances out of the remaining 10, and none of them made more than 20.
And even in the cases of Mount and Loftus-Cheek, neither player was guaranteed a spot at Stamford Bridge when they ultimately left for greener pastures this summer.
Mount stated to MUTV in his first interview after leaving the club, “Several months ago I think it became clear that I wasn’t in Chelsea’s plans moving forward.”. “My choice was made once I learned that United was involved. ”.
Loftus-Cheek added: “I love the club and the fans but I wasn’t feeling content with the amount of time I was playing and the positions I was playing in.
“I believed I had more to offer, but I wasn’t given the chance. I’m playing some really good football and am in good physical shape. The time had come to move on. “.
Such cautions ought to be ringing in Colwill’s ears. Neither is Loftus-Cheek the first nor will it be the last.
The defender, who has yet to even play for Chelsea, has his work cut out for him if he decides to remain at Stamford Bridge. Many academy graduates have tried to make a name for themselves only to find that the opportunities they want aren’t available.
The center-back has received a warning, and he is not even aware of it. He is well aware of the road many of his former teammates have traveled. Actually, when Brighton tried to sign him permanently last year, he was ready to do the same thing himself before settling for a season-long loan.
Also at a crossroads are Callum Hudson-Odoi, Conor Gallagher, Trevor Chalobah, Armando Broja, Ethan Ampadu, and Tino Anjorin.
Good luck to Colwill if he believes he can distinguish himself at Stamford Bridge by being a rare exception from the Chelsea academy. Liverpool will be ready to seize the opportunity if he decides that he must leave as well in order to advance his career.
