But now, following a protracted absence, he’s back and playing football. He played 16 minutes for the club’s U21 team in the Premier League 2 earlier this season in September. He then returned to action in the Premier League International Cup, spending slightly over 30 minutes against Benfica.

In Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy, Gordon has played 105 minutes in total, leading the team against Barrow on Tuesday.

He was listed as a reserve against Toulouse two days later. Although Gordon was unlikely to be used by Liverpool in that match and especially not when the team was still trying to win, it was a good consolation prize for a player who had been out of action for so long.

Gordon appears to be getting more muscular now that he is playing at the academy level. He’s obviously matured a lot, and he’s put on weight too. He appears notably stronger than the slender adolescent Liverpool supporters witnessed competing for the first team nearly two years ago.

Gordon’s development will be patiently handled by Liverpool. It is noteworthy that he turned nineteen only about a month ago. He won’t be rushed back into the starting lineup. However, Jürgen Klopp will also be aware of Gordon’s talent and will eventually realise that, with continued effort, he may once again greatly help the club’s first team.

All three did their best to help Liverpool win in the first half.

While Henderson’s move to the Gulf region received some expected backlash, their decision to make a big-money move to Saudi Arabia was understandable.

Four months have passed since the transfer, but the situation for Firmino, Henderson and Fabinho has not been good.

The Portuguese was instrumental in Fabinho’s move to Al Ittihad, with the former Wolves and Tottenham Hotspur boss first bringing him to Europe when he signed him from Rio Ave in 2012.

Fabinho has missed Al Ittihad’s last six games in all competitions, meaning it was an inevitable blow for the midfielder to see the manager who brought him to the club sacked just months later.

With former Liverpool captain Henderson joining Al Etifaq to reunite with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, that could be a warning sign in itself. His new side are currently seventh in the table and have won just one of their last five league games.

Furthermore, their campaign will not go according to plan after being knocked out of the King’s Cup. Having seen the second-tier Saudi Arabian club sack Robbie Fowler last month despite an unbeaten start to the season, one wonders how secure Gerrard’s position will be.

If he leaves soon, Henderson will be in the same boat as Fabinho and no longer playing under the manager who fought so hard to sign him.

Add to that the very miserable visitors Al-Ettifaq, who Henderson has yet to play against in front of a crowd of over 15,000.
