Liverpool have a covert tool at their disposal in the Anthony Gordon transfer talks

Although Newcastle’s suggestion to trade Jarell Quansah for Anthony Gordon caused the initial negotiations to break down, the transfer may still be possible.

In case you were unaware, there are now two deadlines within the same summer transfer window for the Premier League.

Naturally, trading ends on August 30 at 11 p.m. throughout the entire day. However, top-tier teams are making June 30—this Sunday—a deadline more and more important as they try to make sure they haven’t gone over the £105 million cash-loss cap in the preceding three years.

Because of the point penalties Nottingham Forest and Everton received last season, there is increased attention on this occasion this year. It also explains why so few clubs in January were willing to make purchases.

Among them was Newcastle United, and it’s believed that they are still on the verge of reaching their deadline on Sunday. This is being presented as the rationale behind Liverpool’s bid for Anthony Gordon and the possibility that negotiations this weekend may continue, even though it appears Newcastle will need to initiate contact once more.

Given Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Luis Diaz as options on the left flank, Liverpool believes they are well-stocked there. The latter has reportedly been connected to an escape, however this has not yet been confirmed.

With three years remaining on his contract and merely a profit on the £50 million they spent for Diaz in January 2022, Liverpool does not appear to be in a haste to resolve his future. However, Gordon is certainly talented.

As a former player for Everton, he has also shown no shame in expressing his respect for Mohamed Salah and Steven Gerrard, two idols of Liverpool. Perhaps dropping breadcrumbs?

The issue for Newcastle is that Gordon is in Germany for Euro 2024 with England, making it more difficult to arrange the practicalities of a deal. However, there have been rumours that Liverpool was willing to hold a physical in Leipzig if negotiations had advanced.

In any case, Liverpool already has a strong ally in the area. During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Trent Alexander-Arnold was called “agent Trent” by Reds supporters who urged him to entice Jude Bellingham to Anfield.

Although his “first mission” finally failed, the defender might be able to exert more influence over fellow Liverpudlian Gordon in order to open up a line of communication. Of course, this is all above board, and he must be cautious to avoid any charges of “tapping up.”

Having said that, it is certain that international teammates will communicate, and it is difficult to draw boundaries. Additionally, mid-tournament, Gareth Southgate has already stated that he is okay with his team talking about their club futures.

Kieran Trippier, a defender for Newcastle, might want to observe any conversations between Gordon and Alexander-Arnold. However, Liverpool’s attack is two-fold.

Gordon disclosed last month that, despite not being at the Euros, he is close friends with Curtis Jones from their time together playing for the England under-21 team.

Gordon has hinted that he might be amenable to a move to Liverpool nevertheless, but Alexander-Arnold and Jones might be able to help with rapid information dissemination with less than 36 hours till July left.
