Explained: Why Alexis Mac Allister decided to join Liverpool despite Manchester United transfer interest

Alexis Mac Allister is close to a big move to Liverpool despite Manchester United having expressed interest in the midfielder.
Liverpool agree £35m transfer
The midfielder also had interest from United
Chose Klopp and a more advanced role with the Reds
WHAT HAPPENED? The Argentina international is set to spend £35m ($43.5m) alongside Jurgen Klopp and has passed a medical with the approval of his club Brighton.
WHY IS HE GOING TO LIVERPOOL? United were thought to be in contention for Mac Allister but according to The Times the player had a leaning towards Liverpool which forced Erik ten Hag to explore other midfield options this summer. United are interested in Mason Mount and are looking to sign a deal with Chelsea for the English midfielder.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: Another report from The Athletic lists Mac Allister’s versatility as a trait both Liverpool and United admired when judging the 24-year-old.
They also allege Mac Allister’s father, Carlos, told Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi that his son preferred to play in a more advanced position, where he is expected to play for Klopp.
It has also been reported that Mac Allister doesn’t want to move to Old Trafford because Marcus Rashford won’t give up his favorite number 10 shirt, but this is probably nonsense.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR MAC ALLISTER? The move is expected to be officially announced by Liverpool shortly, after which Mac Allister will join his new team-mates for pre-season training in July, with their first friendly against German club Karlsruher SC on July 19.

Liverpool is one of the final two clubs an £85 million player may join, and they still have a chance to sign him.
Liverpool and Manchester United are competing for the services of Chelsea’s Mason Mount, and Liverpool is still in the running.
For a while now, Mount has been mentioned as one of Liverpool’s main summertime transfer targets. However, their dreams of bringing him into their squad appeared to be dashed last week when it appeared that United had moved ahead of them in line.
Florian Plettenberg, a journalist, asserts that this may no longer be the case. Yesterday, Plettenberg revealed on Twitter that Liverpool are still looking for Mount. The choice of which North West juggernaut to join is now solely up to the gamer. However, United continues to appear to be the new favorite.
News Mount: MUFC is reportedly pressing hard! He is absolutely desired, according to both Ten Hag and the employers. Everyone in the club believes in him, the journalist stated.
He will choose between Man Utd and Liverpool, I understand. At this point, the price is valued at €45-50m (£39-43m) including bonuses.
Mount prepared to make a decision.
For Liverpool fans, this update is a little bit puzzling in terms of what it means. According to a story from last week, Mount has already decided on his next club and wants to join United.
The cost seems to be the only issue still. The player, who only has one year left on his contract, is reportedly asking as much as £85 million from Chelsea. Naturally, any prospective buying groups are requesting that the asking price be drastically reduced.
It would seem more acceptable to charge a fee that is more in line with what Plettenberg is claiming. You can see why Liverpool was initially intrigued if that turns out to be the final selling price for Mount.
Sadly, it appears that the 24-year-old is less interested in the Reds than they are in him. That’s unfortunate because it seems like Mount could truly excel under Jurgen Klopp’s guidance.
A player these days choosing United over Liverpool is also pretty unusual. Sadio Mane, Darwin Nunez, and Cody Gakpo, among others, reportedly choose to sign with the Reds in recent years rather than their fierce rivals.
The possibility that Mount will deviate from the norm could be the first indication of the consequences of Liverpool’s failure to qualify for the Champions League.
The Reds won’t be very alarmed, though. They appear prepared to pursue further targets. Liverpool might postpone those other moves if Mount does a surprise U-turn. But we don’t observe it taking place.
