Liverpool was “just inches away” from acquiring Anthony Gordon when their exchange transfer scheme collapsed.
Newcastle and Liverpool have discussed a possible trade for Anthony Gordon as the Magpies want to earn money to comply with profit and sustainability regulations.
A contract for Anthony Gordon has been discussed by Liverpool and Newcastle as the latter rush to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations (PSR).
Newcastle is thought to have to complete deals by June 30 in order to avoid breaking the aforementioned regulations and perhaps losing points. In recent weeks, a number of players have been connected to transfers; however, no substantial outgoings have been finalised as of yet.
Gordon is one of the primary assets that Newcastle has ‘explored’ the idea of dumping, according to a recent article from The Mail. Mirror Football is aware that they made contact with Liverpool regarding Gordon; however, negotiations ceased when it was mentioned that Jarell Quansah might go the other way.
Liverpool still think highly of Gordon, but after Quansah’s outstanding season last year, they don’t want to lose him, so they won’t use him as leverage in a trade.
After speaking with their Premier League competitors, it is rumoured that the Reds finally opted against making an offer because of their position on Quansah, whom they see as a future England international.
Although Gordon, a lifelong Liverpool supporter, is content in Tyneside and loves collaborating with Eddie Howe, the 23-year-old is aware that discussions have taken place. Gordon, who joined Newcastle in January 2023, is also admired by the French powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain.
Gordon, who is presently travelling to Europe in 2024 with the England team, was named Newcastle’s Player of the Year the previous season following a fantastic rookie campaign in which he scored 11 goals and provided 10 assists in 35 league games.
In other news, Newcastle is negotiating with Anthony Elanga and Elliot Anderson for a second trade in order to acquire the Nottingham Forest winger.
Given that Anderson, 21, is an academy prodigy, his sale would be considered a pure profit. Elanga, a former Manchester United player, left the Red Devils in the summer and left a lasting impression on Forest.
Alexander Isak has also been connected to a move at Newcastle due to their have to trade in order to comply with PSR regulations before Sunday’s accounting deadline. The Sweden international has been linked to Chelsea, but considering Newcastle’s reluctance to go with their star scorer, a move is thought unlikely.
